ABA bank APP and SIM card

Post by Frankl »

Hi Wise ones. I am not in Cambodia at the moment and unlikely to get there for some considerable time. I have an ABA bank account, however I foolishly let my Cambodian SIM card expire and am now locked out of my ABA APP.
I am thinking about getting the mrs.in Cambodia to buy a new SIM card with my old telephone number on it. Then I will try to access the ABA. App, ( from outside Cambodia ) thereby triggering a code to be sent to my Cambodian telephone number IN Cambodia. Then my Mrs will text the code number to me. I enter the code, my username ,and password as per usual.
My question to you is will this work?
If not why?
Any other solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have received a reply from ABA, unfortunately my situation remains unresolved. It seems I could indeed have done as you suggested i.e. added a foreign linked telephone number to my ABA account while I was actually in Cambodia, at least that is my understanding from their email but not while outside the country. So at the moment I am locked out of my APP and back to square one.

"Warm greeting from ABA Bank.
Thanks so much for using ABA product and service.

They will not change it online or remotely. I found this out the hard way when I went to Germany two years ago. I bought a new phone and accidentally deleted the Smart eSIM on the old one when I did a factory reset (which also deleted the ABA app).

Because of the risks that come with SIM cloning, unauthorized porting and SIM renewal by impersonation, I am certain ABA will not accommodate a request via email or phone call to link a new phone number to your account. And because of their ties to the National Bank of Canada, their due diligence and KYC practices are even more stringently enforced. You will need to present yourself in person at a branch to change anything on your account, especially information which is key to accessing the account.

This will not work. It must be a SIM with the same number linked to your ABA account. If she could get that, then you can ask your wife to login on her phone with your user name, phone number and password. And no, she can't text you the verification code sent by ABA. The SIM must physically be on your phone. The ABA app is designed to automatically read and autofill the SMS code. It will not allow you to type this code.

Is it not possible to get the SIM reinstated with the same number?

I just did the same with my UK number after I let it lapse, need to give them the IMSI number (I think that's the right one, not the IMEI) which is printed on the SIM, and they can reactivate

I assume the same process in Cambodia?

Not sure if that will get the app back online, or if you could receive a code without the correct overseas tariff (maybe can add this during the call too?) But could be worth a try.

How does a SIM card expire? Is it when you don’t use it for a certain period of time? Is that period different for the various carriers?
she was quite pretty and looked older
she knew only what had been told her

The app should be on the phone and still work on the internet , unless you deleted the app you would have to go to the bank to get it
“ ok’d “ as i had to do when lost the phone and the bank has to confirm it is you who has the new installation because they have stringent security ..

From what I understand, without use and credit on it, it will expire in a few months. I'm sure it varies from one carrier to another.

Thanks for that. Actually the Mrs. said the same thing to me but I didn't believe her and I duly got an earful for "you never listen me", its just I was so desperate, as not having access to my account is an issue for me. Plus she was never tech savvy, so she must have asked in the phone shop without telling me. Looks like I'll have to accept the situation until I get back to Cambodia.
