Re: Terrace House cancelled, member commits suicide
Netflix just released the final batch. My Japanese isn’t that good. I need the English subtitles to really understand what’s going on. And that only comes with the US version on Netflix.
Netflix picks up the series after a couple seasons in Japan and a movie was already made. Every season is a different location and new members. The series constantly changes. Having young, unmarried random people sharing a house or apartment together is not normal for Japanese. Each member comes (and leaves) for various reasons.
There are so many unwritten Japanese cultural rules. Different parts of Japan have different rules as well. The first seasons had an older member that kept the younger members in line and ensured more harmony. One season was in Hawaii where they had members who were half Japanese and didn’t know the rules. The latest season is back in Tokyo awaiting the Olympics.
It’s an addictive, subtle melodrama. The kind the US used to make. It’s raw reality. Nothing made up.
And so many stories. One story was the aspiring actor who wanted to find ‘a love worth dying for’, to take his craft to the next level.
Japan is all about conformity. Even rebellion is done in a conformist way. Societal pressure to conform is enormous.
RIP to Hana. Hope she finds happiness in her next life.

That was the last season I watched. Okay, but I liked the Tokyo series more.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 10:05 amOne season was in Hawaii where they had members who were half Japanese and didn’t know the rules.
Netflix Japan is hit or miss with English subtitles. Terrace House, yes. Yakuza dramas, no.
