Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky accused in damning drugs report

An explosive report has suggested Team Sky and Bradley Wiggins used performance-enhancing drugs under the guise of treating a legitimate medical condition in order to win the 2012 Tour de France.

The long-awaited report by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee is a potential death knell for Team Sky. It calls into question exactly how they became one of the most successful outfits in British sporting history and draws a number of damaging conclusions.

The most stark is that Team Sky abused the anti-doping system to allow Wiggins, and possibly support riders, to take powerful corticosteroids to prepare them for the Tour de France. It also suggests their manager, Sir David Brailsford, must take responsibility for abandoning an ethos of “winning clean”, which was the genesis of Team Sky, as a hunger for victory took over.

The MPs who led the inquiry also suggest that many people find Team Sky’s story about an infamous jiffy bag delivery to Wiggins at a race in 2011 to be entirely implausible. The inquiry claims it was privy to further evidence that the package contained the corticosteroid triamcinolone and not the decongestant fluimucil, as was claimed by Team Sky. If that were ever proved to be true, and triamcinolone was administered to Wiggins at that time, it would amount to an anti-doping rule violation.

I don't see how you can win the Tour de France without taking drugs, they should just let them get on with it. Otherwise the damned race will take the whole year, a normal person can't cycle like that.

It wasn't doping, he had really bad asthma.

Sir Bradley Wiggins has condemned the parliamentary report into the Team Sky Jiffy bag affair and the team’s use of the corticosteroid triamcinolone as “fabricated” and based on “unsubstantiated evidence. The 2012 Tour de France winner, interviewed on ITV4, also stated that further facts have come to light which he would hope might be made public in the future.

The saga began in autumn 2016 when hackers calling themselves Fancy Bears released documents showing Wiggins had been given permission to use the banned corticosteroid for medical reasons with the appropriate certificates, or TUEs, before his biggest races in 2011, 2012 and 2013, including the 2012 Tour.

This was followed by a 14-month UK Anti-Doping Agency investigation into a package delivered to Team Sky at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2011 – a race Wiggins won – which had been alleged to have contained the same drug. Ukad were forced to close the case earlier this year without reaching a conclusion because of missing medical records.

The inquiry into Doping in Sport by parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee ran in parallel with the Ukad inquiry, and the report was published in March. It included the claim that Team Sky had abused the anti-doping system to allow Wiggins – and possibly other riders – to use triamcinolone to prepare for the Tour de France. The report concluded Team Sky had “crossed an ethical line”. Team Sky strongly rebutted both claims while Wiggins said at the time: “I strongly refute the claim that any drug was used without medical need.”
