Cambodia’s medal hope Sorn Seavmey will share a historic moment with some of the world’s greatest sports personalities when she steps into the majestic Maracana stadium today as the Kingdom’s flag and placard bearer during the Parade of Nations as part of the spectacular Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The 20-year old Seavmey will follow in the footsteps of her elder sister Sorn Davin who did the honours at the 2012 London Olympics.

Cambodia's swimmers:

Cambodia’s second swimming hopeful Hem Thon Vitiny slashed more than a second off her London 2012 personal best to record 29.37 seconds, yet that gallant effort could only take her into fourth place in the women’s 50m freestyle heats in a packed Olympics Aquatics Stadium in Rio on Friday.

Cambodian swimmer Pou Sovijja found himself in at the deep end in the men’s 100 metres freestyle Heat 2, finishing last but one among eight contestants in a time of 54.55 seconds at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Tuesday.http://www.phnompenhpost.com/sport/camb ... mpic-fight

Well done to Cambodia's first female Olympic marathoner who finished a race run under difficult conditions. It is not easy to compete in a race that you know you have no hope of winning, but Nary Ly set a sporting example aged 44, so about time for the younger generation to get off their butts and get running.

Nary Ly stays the course in Rio marathon
Tue, 16 August 2016
H S Manjunath

Cambodia’s first ever female marathon runner in an Olympics, Nary Ly, finished 133rd among 157 entries in the energy-sapping 26 mile, 385 yard (42.195 kilometre) run. But the 44-year-old research scientist took great pride in finishing a race that 24 other athletes failed to complete in the hot conditions.

With a Cambodian flag around her, Ly crossed the finish line in 3hours 20mins and 20 secs to a rousing ovation to record a historic feat that justified Cambodia’s decision to seek a universality placement for her from the International Olympic Committee in a bid to encourage more women to participate in distance running.
