Pheary’s snooker success underscores role of South Korea in nurturing Cambodian talent
8 January 2018
South Korea has been firmly lodged in the collective consciousness of Cambodian sport ever since taekwondo sensation Sorn Seavmey ended the Kingdom’s 70-year Asian Games gold medal drought in Incheon four years ago.
That South Korea’s Choi Yong Sok, who has lived in Phnom Penh long enough to proudly call it as his second home, worked his magic as Seavmey’s coach endeared the east Asian sporting powerhouse even more to the Cambodian sports community.
Then came the unassuming Lee Tae Hoon, little known outside of his country when he took over in 2010 as the national team’s head coach to steer Cambodia to the uncharted territory of the second round of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualification. An orbit Cambodian football had never before reached.
Even as South Korea’s positive influence, enthusiastic involvement and steadfast support spread across the sports spectrum, comes the sensational success story of a Cambodian woman’s glory on the snooker table.
Born in Soung, Tbong Khmum province, Soung Pheary reportedly won the Korean snooker championship for the second year in a row to add to her multiple titles and awards snapped up during her nearly eight-year stay with her supportive Korean husband...

Billiards queen reaches world semis
September 21, 2018
Cambodian billiards champion Srong Pheavy was ejected at the semi final stage of the 2018 Ladies 3-Cushion World Championships in Turkey yesterday going down to legendary former champion Orie Hida of Japan.
South Korea-based Pheavy was making her international debut for Cambodia at the Izmir tournament and shocked fans with her charge to the semis.
In the qualifiers she navigated past Denmark’s Jeanette Jensen as well as a slender defeat of Hida. She also defeated Steffi Daske of Germany to register an unbeaten streak in the qualifiers. In the quarters, she defeated Colombia’s Claudia Lalinde (30-16).
However she met her match in the semi-final as seasoned Hida triumphed 30-10 to eject Pheavy.
42-year-old Hida, the oldest and player in the last four, is a winner of four world titles and the Cambodian was always going to be the underdog.

Re: Cambodian woman is snooker champion in Korea
Well done Srong Pheavy.
I would think that investment in talented sports persons in KoW would be a better use of the money handed out for medals but can see the reward is a carrot that can promote sports persons to excel in their chosen field.
As in most countries it is not necessarily the most skilled who represent their country but those who can afford to travel and compete in national and international competitions.

I think she is a pool champion and not a snooker champion. The white play ball as red dots and that play ball is used in pool and never in snooker. The cue is a pool cue, a snooker cue is longer.

The confusion probably lies with the Cambodian journalists who don't differentiate between the games. Perhaps they are the same word in Khmer ?
This is from her facebook page today.
Last year's photos also show medals for billiards.

There are no pockets on the table so it has to be billiards.
