Cambodia’s first Inline Hockey League kicks off on Saturday

The first-ever inline hockey competition in Cambodia will kick off this weekend.

The Cambodia Inline Hockey League, as the tournament is officially called, will have its opening ceremony on Saturday at the CIS Roller Dome in Phnom Penh. The CIS Roller Dome is the first air dome in Southeast Asia.

Since the opening of CIS Roller Dome, according to tournament organiser Stefan De Gruiter, they have seen a steady growth of participants.

“We started with a small group of eight players and a goalie at the opening weekend of the Roller Dome, brought together to play two exhibition matches against national team players of Hong Kong and Macau. In just one year, we grew to a steady group of players that play pick-up games on Wednesday evenings and a more competitive game every other Saturday. These competitive games will now be replaced by weekly league games,” he said.

De Gruiter said the time is right to organise the tournament.

“As an organisation we feel the time is right to take the next step in the development of inline hockey in Phnom Penh and Cambodia. Starting with an in-house league is this logical next step. Inline hockey is growing in Phnom Penh. We do not only have a large group of adult players, but we also have different youth groups that practice during the week and have started playing matches in the weekends,” he noted.

The league is made up of four teams, with each team consisting of eight to nine players and one goalie. The four teams competing in the tournament are The Street Rats, The Mighty Tuks, Naga and Phnom Penh Pirates.

“We have a mix of North American, European and Cambodian players in the league, Zak Garofolo, chief operating officer at the CIS Roller Dome, revealed.

One of the teams, The Street Rats, is entirely composed of Cambodian players.

“We hope that this team can be the start of a national team programme and that we can build with this team towards international competitions and hopefully participation in the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh. It would be a great opportunity to showcase a unique facility as the Roller Dome and the strength and determination of the local talent at a venue like this,” De Gruiter said.
