Laos shows grit to beat Cambodia 2-1 in ASEAN youth football tournament
Source: Xinhua 2018-04-28 23:50:27

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Following their heavy defeat against Singapore, Laos made a crucial comeback from behind with a 2-1 win over Cambodia in the 6th ASEAN youth football tournament on Saturday.

In order to qualify, Laos, which was crushed by the tournament favorite Singapore 5-1 in the first game, had to collect a win.

Cambodia scored first in the 15th minute before Laos broke through Cambodia's goal-line in the second half with a long shot equalizer. Without giving up their offensive effort even in the injury time, Laos sealed the victory with a 93rd minute free kick goal, sealing a hard-fought victory of 2-1.

Laos now goes up to 2nd place in Group B while pressure will be on Cambodia, who has to grab a victory over the group leader Singapore next Monday in order to advance.

A total of seven U-22 teams from the Southeast Asian region are competing for the trophy in the biennial tournament.

Group B witnesses Laos, Cambodia and Singapore, while Brunei is in Group A with Thailand, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. The top two finishers of each group will advance to the semifinals.

The ASEAN youth football tournament was initiated by Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah back in 1997. The first tournament was won by Indonesia in 2002. Brunei beat Indonesia 2-0 in the 2012 final, but conceded the crown to Myanmar in 2014.

Well done team Cambodia.

Cambodia into semis as Suhana strike sees off Singapore
1 May 2018
Taking to the pitch for the must-win clash with Singapore, who had beaten Laos 5-1 at the start of the three-team Pool B campaign four days ago, coach Prak Sovannara’s hard hitting message to the players was to remind them that their destiny was in their hands after the injury-time loss to Laos on Saturday night.

After fending off some forceful thrusts from the Singaporeans, Suhana slotted in a rebound 23 minutes into the game.

A slender 1-0 lead is always at risk, however, and in the second session the Cambodian defence came under intense scrutiny.

But after watching his charges waste some decent chances, Sovannara was relieved to see the young side stoutly see out the match and was full of praise for their fighting spirit and teamwork.

The three teams in Pool B ended up with one win each. On the strength of their rout of Laos, Singapore topped the group, with Cambodia’s goal quotient just enough to keep Laos out of the semifinals.

It's the revenge of the small teams, as Cambodia beats Myanmar, and Timor-Leste beats Singapore, to make it through to the tournament final on May 5 in Brunei.
Anyone have a TV timetable for the match ?

Cambodia stun Myanmar to set up final showdown with Timor-Leste
03 May 2018 | 17:07 ICT
For the first time in nearly a decade, Cambodia's National Football Team is well poised to bring home silverware from a major regional tournament, following a 2-1 win over a much favoured Myanmar side in the semifinals of the U22 Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy at the HB National Stadium in Brunei Darussalam on Wednesday night.

And as Cambodia were scripting their story of pluck, perseverance and pride, Timor-Leste, the “Little Samba Nation”, were writing a glorious chapter in their own at the Track and Field Sports Complex, where they mastered Singapore 2-1 to set up a final showdown with the Young Warriors on May 5, in a matchup few would have dared predict when the event began on April 23.

Back in 2009, Cambodia won the four-team BIDC Cup, but ever since the team has been chasing shadows, often confined to appearances in the SEA Games and making it past the early stages of qualification for major events, making the second round of regional World Cup qualifying in 2018 and the third round of Asian Cup qualifying this year, but never quite threatening to land a big success.

But hard-working Ministry of National Defense midfielder Narong Kakada helped pave the way a Cambodian final appearance with a first-half brace that went unanswered after an own goal from defender Soeuy Visal just before the break.

Goalkeeper Keo Soksela and a sturdy defence effectively thwarted several attempts by Myanmar to claw their way back into the game in a fiercely combative second session, but the day unquestionably belonged to coach Prak Sovannara and his group of highly motivated players.

U21s return from Brunei
Cambodia’s Under -21’s national football team touched down in Phnom Penh yesterday evening, returning from their fine run to the final of the recently concluded regional Hassanal Bolkiah Youth Championship’s in Brunei.

The young Kouprey’s went down to Timor-Leste by a single goal early in the second half of Sunday’s final.

During an even first half, Cambodian defender Chheng Meng received a red card for lashing out at his opponent. Cambodia faced the remainder of the game with just 10 men and their opponents sensing their chance made sure to pile players forward and catch Cambodia’s defence napping.

The game’s only goal came in the 51st minute via the right boot of Henrique Wilson da Cruz. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, a burst of pace from the tall forward saw him evade the challenge of the Cambodian centre-backs and expertly tap the ball home beyond opposition keeper Keo Soksela for the match winner.

Cambodia U-21 captain talks of passion for football
May 30, 2018
CAMBODIA’S national under-21 team captain Souey Visal highlighted his desire to channel his passion for the sport on the pitch during the final of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy for Asean Youth Football Tournament 2018 recently.

The 22-year-old was first made captain in 2017 during the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur under the tutelage of former Brazilian head coach Leonardo Vitorino.

“With a strong voice, we will enjoy the football, concentrate on the match and keep the passion of the game in your heart,” he told local media in the final preview at the Lecture Theatre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

“We are brothers and we help each other in the game,” said Visal who plays his club football for Cambodian League outfit Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC.

Asked how it felt to be the first Cambodian captain to lead his side in the HBT final, Visal said, “I’m very happy to be in the final. It is a great deal for our team-mates who worked so hard especially the last two games.”

The team captain spoke of the importance of instilling never-say-die qualities ahead of their first-ever HBT final which they eventually lost 1-0 to Timor Leste.
