Re: NGO Activist Alex Gonzalez-Davidson Arrested in Cambodia

VOD News (http://vodhotnews.com/27602) just reported that H.S. pledged that there will not be any development of the Cheay Areng Hydropower Dam during this 5th mandate, until a proper environment impact assessment study has been conducted. He has blamed Alex and Mother Nature of blocking access to t...

Re: NGO Activist Alex Gonzalez-Davidson Arrested in Cambodia

I wonder where he'll make his base now. Maybe Thailand? Maybe he'll try sneaking back in? Sad, but unsurprising, that it ended this way. As Joon pointed out, he's lucky he's a foreigner because otherwise he'd be getting the Chut Wutty treatment. He's been blacklisted from re-entering Cambodia :( He...

Re: 40 years ago, the unthinkable happened

Wow, that sounds like it could be really traumatizing or really cathartic, depending on one's personality type, to go to the reenactments. But probably more traumatizing. Do you know any Cambodians who go and what their reasons are? I don't know of any Cambodian friends who attend the commemoration...

Re: NGO Activist Alex Gonzalez-Davidson Arrested in Cambodia

^ Exactly. There are many young, courageous Cambodians who try to make changes happen. However, there is just so much they can do at their levels, without putting their lives at risk. Alex is a very dedicated, outspoken environment activist but his tactics use sarcasm (as evidenced by the tone in so...

Re: 40 years ago, the unthinkable happened

Cambodians commemorate the so-called "Day of Hatred," now called the "Day of Remembrance" on May 20. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_Remembrance_%28Cambodia%29 On that day, there are reenactment scenes of the murderous acts of the Khmer Rouges that take place ...

Re: Barang...

I'm also leaning on Soi Dog's explanation that the Khmer word Barang was borrowed from the Thai word Farang but because Khmers don't use the "F" sound that much, it became a "B" sound. In French, the words for French (Français) and France sound nothing like "Barang"... ...

Re: Barang...

and the French word for brake, "frein", is written ហ្វ្រ័ង. We actually don't write ហ្រ្វ័ង either we write ហ្រ្វាំង Good point. I went with the Lemon Khmer-English Dictionary's spelling. Some other words borrowed from French are "phare" (lighthouse, car lights) and is written ហ...

Re: Barang...

So is it possible that this original Thai word for Frenchman made its way to Cambodia and then was changed to barang due to some Khmer pronunciation issues with the F sound? I dunno...does Khmer have words that start with a hard F sound? I had to leave my 'Learn to Speak Khmer' books in Thailand a ...

Re: Fifty Shades of Grey BANNED in Cambodia

If I'm not mistaken, all movies shown and to be filmed in Cambodia are supposed to get the green light from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. Also the Jai Kon's message sounds like they have been informed AFTER they had planned to show the movie, because there are 13 people who won pre-screenin...

Re: She took my photo too

Perhaps it's time to show her photo around a bit. See if anybody knows her and what's up. Agreed. Anyone know why the photos were deleted? If anyone has them, feel free to post them here on CEO. Admin explained why here: [k440 link removed] Up until now, nobody has given any reliable information or...
