Re: Angie's tats, and what it all means

She's not Buddhist... Her son is though, and apparently that's good enough for her. '"I asked for it to be done in Buddhist Sanskrit, which is part of (Maddox's) history." Some have speculated that Angelina Jolie is now a Buddhist (rumor also has it that Angelina and Brad had a Buddhist ma...

Re: Islamic terrorism: where did it all start?

Thanks for the input, I'll check both those references out. In a nutshell, what do they put it down to: Western foreign policies or Islamasist ones? Lots of things were going on to give birth to terrorism, Western greed and cultural imperialism triggered it. On the other hand, Wahhabism (the Arabia...

Re: First they killed my father

So - it's worth watching - once at least ? Yeah, not necessarily for the right reasons though. Whether we like it or not, the film itself is a historical moment for Cambodia, and in that sense it should be seen by the relevant parties. Should this be the way that younger people are exposed to knowl...

Re: First they killed my father

A few other notes on the film. 1) I agree that the book is better than the movie, but while the book works quite well as a straight up memoir, it is hardly a great piece of literature. For this reason I think that the film was a mistake to shoot in the first case, or at least should have been rework...

Also another Curtis doc called The Power of Nightmares. Everything's in there.

Look into a man called Sayyid Qutb.

Re: First they killed my father

Watched on Netflix last night. Here's my review, like it or leave it. The movie opens ominously, I was very excited, and even felt a shiver on my skin as the Khmer Rouge enter the city. However, within about 45 minutes, I was struggling to pay attention. A movie with some beautiful scenes unfortunat...

Re: Khmer Language Questions (Learning and Speaking Cambodian)

I hear ស្រុកខ្មែរ - Srok Khmer all the time, but never used for other countries (Srok Thai, Srok 'other countries', etc.). I definitely hear ស្រុកថៃ quite a lot, perhaps because I spend quite a bit of time near the border. But yes, never for other countries. Another reason why I say that ស្រុក is m...

Re: Khmer Language Questions (Learning and Speaking Cambodian)

when speaking of countries, which is the more correct form to use ស្រុក - Srok ប្រទេស - Brotes/Broteh i believe they are interchangeable going off my notes from school, just wondering if there is more to it than that? if used in different contexts or whatever... To my experience, ប្រទេស is the more...

Re: My most recent experience at everyone's favourite visa agent

Yeah, I agree with Alonzo. We shouldn't have to be the ones paying in retrospect for bureaucratic incompetence. The whole thing is a scam. I'm not gonna complain to the Ministry of Labour about it (I may sweetly apologise if I need to), because why be honest to skeezy crooks who are trying to get yo...
