Remembering Taa Barang

Last July 2019, Taabarang and I had interesting correspondence about writing. He recognized a bit of himself in some of my writing, and he knew I was one of the expats around Phnom Penh in the early '90s. We knew the same people and places, and had a good friendship for a bit of time. He told me abo...

Re: “I am a bad English teacher”

a native speaker would be the best source of all, and NKOTB New Kids On The Block? I don't think Marky Mark is the paragon of spoken English. I speak and teach RP as I went to the poshest school in the world. But I don't think it matters unless the teacher has a thick regional accent. The students ...

Re: “I am a bad English teacher”

I taught at ACE for many years (as did my ex). To teach English, you really do need to enunciate. The admins preferred hiring Australians, but other teachers in my day ('94 - 2001) included people from Scotland, Wales, the Deep South (although the gent's accent was pretty mild), New Zealand, Canada,...

Re: Funerals

Find a trustworthy woman to put in charge of this stuff. They're very good at knowing what to do. Very loud music. Plastic chairs and tables. Cans of coca cola etc. Lots and lots of flowers, wreaths, large photos of deceased. Coffin [ed. to say: or person under sheet, as noted above] in the mourning...

https://i.imgur.com/AoiMqSI.jpg May 2012, the day before my father's memorial service, a huge storm suddenly rolled in. I was driving a Mustang convertible with the top down and rolled over to snap this. My friend was begging me to put the top up! I did, just in time. Big rolling thunder storm with...

Re: A daughter's 40-year search for the truth behind the Khmer Rouge's most haunting photograph

This was the most moving photo in S 21, for me. I wrote about this photo in my book. Seeing it again takes me back twenty-five years, to when I first saw it. Front and side photos of this poor lady with her baby are very sad. Seeing her granddaughter holding her photo is quite incredible. I'm so gla...
