Re: Illiteracy in young(ish) Khmers

Kammekor You make good points. I know of the issues with data collection, actual versus 'target' etc. But in my experience, across urban and rural scenarios, 8 out of every 10 people being able to read/write (and i'm setting a low bar) probably isn't too far from the truth. Numeracy now, that's a w...

Re: Illiteracy in young(ish) Khmers

But then consider the number of city dwellers versus province dwellers, consider the age profile of the country. (City dwellers more likely to be literate, young people more likely to be literate). And perhaps, with the greatest of respect, your inlaws may not be representative of the whole country...

Re: Illiteracy in young(ish) Khmers

With those impressive-looking stats, it would be interesting to know how many of those "literate" people just about pass the threshold and are functionally illiterate. Perhaps similar to the employment stats where 90+% of the population are employed. Cambodia local government certainly is...

Re: Illiteracy in young(ish) Khmers

10 years ago 50% of khmers couldnt read or write, i suppose slowly its getting lower, and i know some european people also who hardly can: Where did you pluck that stat from? Unless you are including babies and dead people in it then it's complete nonsense. The adult literacy rate ten years ago was...

Re: left-handed golf clubs??

A few years ago I had the same quest, to hire/borrow LH clubs. I failed. The only option I found was to buy a second has set - which was really expensive (at golf shop in Aeon2). There is a Facebook group called Phnom Penh social golf, you could ask there. Alternatively if you want to buy, there are...

Re: Is my Electricity Bill high?

Anyone else being charged 30 cents per killowatt hour?? I helped a friend look for a new place last year and it wasn’t unusual for mom and pop apartment style places to ask for 0.30 for electricity and $5 per person per month for water. I saw several like that, and these were places without elevato...

Re: Is my Electricity Bill high?

Yup. That's high. Even with a big room/s. I'm getting ripped at .25 and it is around $100/mth. 24/7 ac. You realise a ceiling fan heats your room? In front, you feel the breeze, but the motor heats the room. So does everything that uses electricity, especially your fridge.... As do people. If he ge...

Re: Is my Electricity Bill high?

I am not sure if my electric company is overcharging me but maybe not. I live in Siem Reap. I didn’t check the Kilowatts but I will. My a/c runs almost 24/7 and I have a tv, a few lights, a computer, one ceiling fan and a small wall fan. My electric bill is usually about $270. per month in this sea...
