If you make your own, to get that authentic Thai taste you will have to add msg/Rotdi and lots of sugar.

Battambang try Heng Chhay Ly Supermarket or the store opposite the central market, north side. If they don't have what you want they will usually get it.

Your partner may have problems understanding Australian english. Maybe she needs someone who speaks slowly and enunciates clearly at least until she gets used to it. It is not so difficult for someone like that to just cross the border. On the Thai side they would just think she was a Luk khrueng, a Thai of mixed race and she would be able to speak English.

There is a guy on the Thai side who gives out the cards who is helpful. There are a few, but the short, well dressed, really polite one is the boss, and the best. People doing the reverse are able to pay a 100 Baht service fee and go back the same day. Should be possible your way. I go thru there often and have never seen any Khmer helpers.
