Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Re: American Charles F Harris Jumps from Sokha Hotel 20th Fl

Post by General Mackevili »

Ok, I finally have some more info about the American man, Charles "Charlie" Harris, who committed suicide by jumping to his death from the Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh.

He was a Thailand expat who has been living in Phuket.

He leaves behind a wife and 2 children, who were also living in Phuket, Thailand with him.

He had been suffering from depression for a while already.

It looks like he was the co-owner of a yacht chartering business in Phuket, Thailand (Maybe DaVinci Yacht Charters Phuket?).

He also did a lot of surfing in Indonesia, but I'm not sure if he lived there.

Between the police claiming they have video that shows him jumping, and that he was already suffering from depression, I think it's save to call this a suicide.

I called it that yesterday because I thought everything pointed to it, but I think it's more than a fair conclusion now.

Will update a bit more when I get home...

Oh dear, sad for his family.

But does this mean that Cambodia is more depressing than Thailand ? Or maybe its just easier to do something like this far from home ?

Charlie Harris was co-owner of a few chartered boats companies, including one that does surfing tours in Indonesia:

Surfing charters to both North Sumatra and West Sumatra and offers surf charters to the Mentawai Islands, the Telos, Nias, the Hinako Islands (Asu & Bawa), Bangkaru, the Banyaks and Simeulue.

Bohemian Baru Luxury Surf Charters at Affordable Prices

The domain for Surf N Sumatra is owned by Charlie Harris:

And another one that lists him as the owner/operator called SunLine cruises:

http://www.songlinecruises.com

THE BOAT – Bohemian Baru is a 62' aluminum power catamaran custom-built by the owner/operators Steve Bridge and Charlie Harris. It was built specifically for surf charter.

THE SKIPPER - Steve Bridge was born in England, raised in Australia, and has since spent his time between California, Indonesia, and Oz. He has operated four different surf charter boats in Indonesian waters during the last twenty years. Two of these he built himself.

I just found this and thought it was strange. Charles Harris left a suicide note, agonizing to the hotel for the trouble he'd cause:

“When the police and U.S. Embassy checked his room, they saw a note he had written,” he said, adding that officials told him the American had left a note apologizing for any “interruption” that his suicide might cause for people at the hotel.
