Re: Australia-Cambodia asylum seeker deal finished ?
Refugees from Nauru are supposedly looking for jobs - if they haven't left the country already. Nobody seems to really know :
https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/refu ... obs-97455/...“They are renting their own apartments. As the settlement services provider, IOM is in the process of helping them find job opportunities, and yes, there are several promising opportunities out there now,” she added.
On Tuesday, Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said that the Rohingya refugee, who had asked to return to Burma, was scheduled to have departed the country on October 11.
General Sopheak said on Friday that he believed the man had left, but that he could not confirm his departure...

The refugee settlement agreement between Cambodia and Australia continues on its way. The Australian ambassador thanks the Cambodians for their cooperation in settling Nauru refugees in Cambodia, and the Cambodian authorities say they have no plans to take more refugees but would like more money from Australia anyway.

Refugee Deal Dead in the Water
Friday, 05 August 2016
Angela Corcoran, the new Australian ambassador to Cambodia, met with Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon at the Foreign Ministry yesterday to discuss a variety of issues, including aid packages and further bilateral cooperation.
Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said the ambassador thanked Cambodia for its “highly valued” adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding on the settlement of refugees in Cambodia signed in 2014.
http://www.khmertimeskh.com/news/28112/ ... the-water/Despite the deal’s failings, the government here said they were planning to bring another two refugees from Nauru to the Kingdom at the end of May, and planned for officials to interview them sometime in June.
Tan Sovichea, head of the Interior Ministry’s refugee unit, told Reuters in May that two Iranians had “volunteered” to come to Cambodia.
Yet when asked about the two Iranians who the government allegedly interviewed in June, Major General Kem Sarin, a spokesman for the immigration department, told Khmer Times yesterday that no more refugees would be coming to Cambodia.
Maj. Gen. Sarin even said no government officials ever actually went to Nauru in June to interview the Iranian refugees, refuting previous statements from government officials.
Mr. Sounry confirmed Maj. Gen. Sarin’s statement, curiously saying the topic of more refugees coming to Cambodia was not brought up at the meeting with Ms. Corcoran despite her praise of Cambodia for this exact topic.
In addition to the $40 million provided to Cambodia for taking in the five refugees, of which only $1.4 million was actually spent on the refugees themselves, Australia has pledged to provide more than A$90 million in 2016 for a variety of sectors including election assistance, landmine clearance, agricultural production, rural development and transnational crime.
“Regarding this cut down of budget policy, it will not affect Cambodia at all. Cambodia will still receive the same amount of budget with A$90 million for this year,” Mr. Sounry said...

Re: Australia-Cambodia asylum seeker deal finished ?
what a waste of money. They could have bought each of those five refugees a Sydney harbourside mansion for that.
My understanding is that four of the five have left Cambodia anyway.

Australia has contracted a private company on a "confidential" basis to oversee further transfers of refugees between Nauru and Cambodia.
However, the optimist statements by Australia's new private migrant organization conflict with the statement by the Cambodian immigration department spokesman last Thursday :

The Australian government has quietly contracted a new organisation to resettle refugees from Nauru to Cambodia under its controversial A$55 million deal, but confusion shrouds its role, which appears to replicate that of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Connect Settlement Services, which is contracted by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and the Australian Border Force to support refugees in Nauru, has been working in Cambodia for the past month.
Spokesperson Laurie Nowell said AMES Australia and Queensland-based MDA are both partners with Connect Settlement Services, “which has been contracted to provide settlement services to support people transferred from Nauru to Cambodia”...
A spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection initially refused to disclose whether it had contracted a new organisation but responded when questioned directly about Connect and its overlap with IOM...
However, when asked to clarify the confusion surrounding the duplicate roles, the spokesperson said they had “nothing further to add at this time”. The spokesperson did not respond to questions about the cost of the new contract, which Nowell said was confidential...

All I can say to his big fuckup by the Australian government is,,, if they want my tax money and support , then I want to know where , how much and why my tax money is being spent. A message I also told my [ arrogant ] local member of parliament, who said they have it all under control.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Re: Australia-Cambodia asylum seeker deal finished ?
The "resettlement in Cambodia" thread in the tapestry is a minor part of the narrative,
which - although horribly expensive - seems to be working well.
The Australian government is saying: "You will NOT be resettled in Australia! Got that?
Instead, you will be dumped in Nauru or somewhere
equally horrid and then - when you have tired of
threatening suicide and sewing your lips up and so on
and so forth - then you will have the chance of being
sent to Cambodia. Not Australia, CAMBODIA!"

More Nauru refugees headed for Cambodia
Fri, 14 October 2016
Mech Dara and Shaun Turton
Three more refugees held by the Australian government on Nauru have volunteered to come to Cambodia, a senior government official said yesterday.
Interior Ministry immigration chief Sok Phal said a recent government delegation to the Pacific island had interviewed three men who had agreed to move to the Kingdom under the controversial resettlement program. “We have made a report to the ministry [which will] decide” whether to accept the group, Phal said.
Phal said he could not recall the group’s nationalities, though a well-placed source suggested the new batch included a Pakistani, an Afghan and a Sri Lankan.
Under the deal, inked in 2014, Cambodia agreed to take Australia’s unwanted refugees held on Nauru in exchange for an A$40 million aid program. Canberra also stumped up A$15 million for resettlement services.
