Borrowed words

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Funny you mention that dish. A few years ago there was a request to change the name of this dish to Somlor maju Vietnam.

There are tons of borrowed French words, for obvious reasons. I can't be bothered to think of and list all the ones I know but most medical terms are French (even simple ones like bacteria, antibiotics etc). Several construction/building terms are also French: screwdriver, bolt, cement, concrete, tiles, etc. Lots of simple words also have French origins (backpack, coat etc).

Banh hoi is also a very popular dish in Cambodia. Also known as Vietnamese noodles.

These names come from the days of the week in French.
Lundi (Monday)
Mardi (Tuesday)
Jeudi (Thursday)
Samedi (Saturday)
Dimanche (Sunday)

Amusingly, no one's called Mercredi (Wednesday) or Vendredi (Friday).
