Someone mentioed paid skype. Skype to skype is free right? I tried it out to a friend in Thailand and it seemed to eat a lot of data. Paying for skype to regular landlines or cells would incur both the skype charge and the used data no? Some of the plans mentioned seem pretty cheap for fata and international calls. I guess going to a knowledgeable dealer and I should be on my way in no time

Paid Skype uses a combination of phone and data and allows you to direct call mobiles and landlines in other countries at a reduced rate. The quality of the call is usually better, although this is governed by the data connection on your calling device (typically your mobile). You can buy blocks, say $10 USD, that don't expire. Typically much more reliable than free Skype to Skype unless you and your contact are both on very good connections.

Yes, correct.

Still, the data is cheap as chips.

It definitely depends where you're calling to see if it's worth it.

Skype lists their international call rates.

I pay about $50 a year and I can call to the USA and Canada, landlines and mobile, unlimited, and it also gives me a phone number, which allows anyone to call ME from any phone.

It calls international mobile to mobile (phone connection, not IP call) for free? Do you have a link for that?

^ that takes a little deciphering. First, it's US-centric. Second, I'd bet the receiving party is getting slugged if they're not using the app.
