Re: The Depressing Side Effects of the Expat Lifestyle
what i find the funniest, i get more home sick when im in England than when im do when im in Cambodia and i spend a hell of a lot more of my time in Cambodia than i do in England haha,
the funny thing is since i been back in england these past couple of month, the effort my Cambo/Thai local (plus expat) friends have made keeping in contact with me has blown me away, especially when i compare it with the amount of people from england that keep in contact me while im away living in Cambodia (could probs count on 1 hand lol)

Re: The Depressing Side Effects of the Expat Lifestyle
The OP from the article had a very subjective view of expat life - all relating to her own POV. There are so many different types of expats and expat lifestyles that while this experience is probably true for her, it has nothing to do with a lot of other people's experiences as an expat.
As for Cambodia, I have noticed that the NGO people move around a lot - often every 2 years - so yes, that does make it hard to maintain friendships.

Jamie_Lambo touched on something there. I get more emails, SMSs and PMs from friends in Southeast Asia when I'm back home than I get from old friends in Canada. In fact, if I didn't email most of them, I wouldn't hear from them in years, if ever. I do tend to make the first move and continue to write notes to some folks, but that has trailed off tremendously the last five years. In fact, I've met the best friends I've ever had right here in Southeast Asia. Most of them I've known 10 years or more.
Lonely here? Never. I'm back home twice a year. Within days I'm climbing the walls and feeling lonely even when I'm out with the old (so-called) friends.

Me too, I never get lonely I always take my shadow with me for company. You could say we are inseparable and the best of friends.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Inside my shadow, I can hear you. Am I near you?
Inside my shadow, I can smell you. can I tell you?
Inside my shadow, I can love you. Think I need you.
Inside my shadow, I can feel you. I've embraced you.
Am I Real? Am I Real?
