Re: China's future [ESL thread]
You're not the brightest are you? I can see why you teach English.qinjingyou wrote:So you spent three years living in Shenzhen on an F visa. That sounds unpleasant, even though I quite enjoyed my short visit there.TheGrinchSR wrote:"a modern apartment, rode an electric motorbike" - doesn't add up, sorry in most major cities of China - motorbikes are banned. And where they aren't banned... apartments aren't modern (not that they're all that modern even at the best addresses - like Shenzhen's tallest building, where 7,000 RMB a month gets you a room that would fit comfortably inside my Cambodian bathroom and where the shower units are mounted directly above the toilets...qinjingyou wrote:You paid Y40 for a bottle of beer? Wow. I got a small keg of German beer for Y60.
To OP: obviously YMMV. I always had a legal visa , a modern apartment, rode an electric motorbike ... I came here, talked to a couple of schools and went into another line of work.
Pollution is terrible and there are too many people, but overall I liked China
It was illegal too, to teach on a business visa.
I had a z visa, experts certificate, and residence certificate. No visa runs for me. Just extend the residence certificate each year.
Motorbikes are only banned in city centers, they're all over the suburbs. Zhejiang had flocks of ebikes zooming home at rush hour, really amazing.
7000/month isn't very good, it wouldn't get you far. Most teachers I knew made more than that.
Curious, why couldn't you get a Z visa?
7,000 RMB was the rent on an apartment (it would be more now, 6,000 RMB is about average rent in less prestigious parts of Shenzhen now) - I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning for an ESL salary, let alone show up and teach. And I wouldn't have lived there if you'd have paid me. In the end I found an apartment which had been completely renovated (at huge expense) by a Hong Konger.
I owned 3 businesses in China (though not technically legally) and was on an f-visa because the spousal visa program was on hold thanks to the Olympics - Asian Games - Unversiade Games trilogy...
No, motorbikes are banned throughout most major cities. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen for example.

For anyone thinking of teaching in China... these figures are about right
http://www.china-tesol.com/Jobs_with_TE ... teach.html
Note: The estimated worth of an apartment included in your deal and a flight are both substantially inflated.
The best deals are in Tier 1 cities... by the time you go below Tier 2, the deals are generally appalling. I've met TEFL folks in China picking up 2,500 RMB/month plus a shoddy cockroach infested apartment. On the bright side, you are likely to get a fantastic job title such as "Professor of English" to make up for the lousy wages and conditions. Even the article notes that you should not expect to live a Western standard of life on a teacher's salary... and they're selling TEFL jobs in China.

No, $6 - 35 RMB for a pint of beer. Who drinks bottles when you can get decent draft? Oh, I remember... English teachers in China. I've got nothing to sell you; you couldn't afford it.qinjingyou wrote:I bow in the face of your astonishing knowledge of China. You really normally paid 40 kuai for a bottle of beer ? Man, it's a shame Nok Tang isn't around anymore. I could see you and him getting along really well, Grinch.

Technically you can't get the appropriate visa to teach legally in China unless you have at least a bachelor's degree. The question then becomes this: why would anyone with a bachelor's degree work for the wages offered to English teachers in China? A 16 year old high school dropout can earn more at a McDonald's in Seattle than an experienced degree holder working at an English school in a disgusting, polluted industrial city in China.

Teachers can often do very well in Vietnam. Also, if you PM me, I can tell you how to get a certification that will allow you to teach at international schools and exit the TEFL market altogether (if you have a bachelor degree or better).
Re: China's future [ESL thread]
i wish i had the Caucasian look, so i would work as a TEFLer. Even though I have a four years TEFL certificate from the university, but my salary would be still really low.
