The meter doesn't measure voltage and if your voltage was low the only way to increase it would be to use increased amperage which will raise your bill not lower it. As a general rule anytime you convert energy or add another electrical appliance to a system the energy use goes up.

I visited an expat colleague in Steung Meachey (sp?) the other day who has in the last couple of months installed a UPS, which uses four truck-sized batteries and serves his whole house. This setup can start his fridge, freezer and aircons simultaneously, and when he demonstrated it the fans actually sped up and stabilised once he kicked over to stored power. Impressive rig, apparently not that expensive or difficult to install. My overwhelming thought was about not being in Kansas any more, Toto. It's been a long time since I've relied on generator power (apart from cyclone season the Outback), so this was all a bit of an eye opener.
