Will this be the start ofthe end of the Phuket tuk tuk mafi?
they were out in force the past 2 days,http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-new ... ad-image-4
saw many army guys with video cameras here in Kamala, tearing down the tuk tuk /taxi stands an arresting drivers,
All car were being stopped for a short time and the drivers had to produce driving licenses an reregistration,
One of the best things to come out of the coup and
this is why the ARMY was needed. http://phukettuktuks.com/
they wanted to start an airport bus form the airport to the beach towns ( Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, kata but...
April 5th--LOCAL UNEDUCATED TUK TUK MAFIA THUG SPOKESPERSON SAYS " WE WILL BLOCK THE ROADS IF THE NEW BUS SERVICE OPERATES".
The Kata-Karon tuk-tuk drivers told him that the bus route could be launched, but not into Patong, Karon or Kata. If the service did go ahead to those three places, they would “definitely block the road to stop itâ€.
Phuket is nice if u don't need to use public transport and never rent a jet ski

Imagine if they tried to enforce that throughout the entire country.phuketgazette wrote:Also targeted in the current crackdown are the kickbacks that taxi and tuk-tuk drivers receive in bringing tourists to specific shops, where the visitors are overcharged for items.
Thailand's tourist industry was built on this sort of thing.

The ridiculous transport situation in Phuket was the reason for never visiting, and never intending to visit the place.

Good to know.. What is the best island or beach location in this region? Doesn't have to be in Thailand, but just in the countries located near Cambodia..

i really like Phuket, others hate it, Koh Lanta, south of Krabi, Islands off of Trang further south. Koh Rong is nice off of shv but i prefer the open sea to the bay. Vietnam has some nice beaches/islands as well
Phuket: -- Honorary consuls and tourism business owners this afternoon deluged the Commissioner of Police Region 8, Lt Gen Panya Mamen with flowers, in thanks for the action taken by him and his men against illegal taxis over the past few days.
The flood of flowers came as Gen Panya prepared for a press conference to give an update on progress so far.
He told the press that so far:
96 people of 108 who are subject to arrest warrants are in custody.
79 taxi stands built on public land have been demolished in the areas of responsibility of Kathu, Chalong, Tah Chat Chai, Cherng Talay, Kamala and Vichit police stations.
Investigations continue to identify stands that should be demolished in areas overseen by Thalang and Phuket City police stations.
Just one area was found to be “cleanâ€: the area looked after by Tung Tong police station contained no illegal taxi stands.
Gen Panya said that the Region 8 task force had received good cooperation from local authorities, and the witness protection scheme was working well, with no witnesses threatened.

Bus's still run/ still plenty of motos
there still a couple of hundred tuk tuk's and green plated cars ( taxi's)
all they did was arrest those that were seen causing trouble before/ setting up blockades before and harassing tourists and other legal drivers.
they have also destroyed the Illegal taxi stands and the government plans on building others for them.
Its a start, Next step is freeing up the beach road in Patong from tuk tuk's and motos/cars for rent

So it'll still cost 400 baht for a 15 minute ride between the beaches?
