And check it out after a heavy rain to see how deep the street floods.

Let's see this if most part of Phnom Penh will be flooded like previous year as there were a lot of drainage re-innovations had been done this year with the donation by Japanese financially aid.

It'd be unlikely unless it starts raining quite a bit more, this year has been very dry.

I listened to local news a couple days ago on TV. It said, i will start to have more rain in August.

NO.

Never rent anything unseen, unless a very close friend/family have seen it.

Ever.

Guest house/hotel, then look, then rent.

What is your budget? I would rather live in a nicer part of town and commute than live someplace like Sen Sok near a job. Cheap rent sounds great until there is an open air sewer masquerading as a canal under your balcony.

This is the way to go. I don't know if it is mentioned yet, but Vlad wrote a decent apartment hunting guide which I think is sticky'd here in the housing sub-forum.

Russian Market, BKK1 BKK2 BKK3, Duan Penh. It depends where you work as traffic does suck here. If you work way up by Wat Phnom, you may not want to live in the Russian Market area.

I would just go around and test out prices and areas. Use Google Map and just hire a tuk tuk driver for the day. Get a Khmer person to help you. Don't have a Khmer friend, ask the locals and expats groups on Facebook " Expats and locals living in Phnom Penh" is the name of the FB group. Tons of English speaking Khmer people on there who'd probably help ya out.

I know BKK1 is OVER PRICED in my opinion.

I am down in Boeng Tompun and am loving my top floor of a house for $250 per month. Just signed another lease. Quite a few people in the neighborhood. We love it as it is very quiet and has a neighborhood feel with some trees.

Take your time and remember you are not back home so don't pay $1000 for a shitty 1 bedroom in BKK1.

Cheers

Cam Nivag wrote:One reason why I would be very reluctant to commit to any Phnom Penh accommodation based on photos online is that 25% of all buildings in Phnom Penh are located right next door to a huge construction site.
This alone would be a good enough reason to not get a place before you arrive.

I checked out The Local 2 on riverside the other day.

They offered me a very cool looking, huge room for $25.

Balcony, WiFi, really cool looking room, blah blah..

I was thinking I would do it, and I wanted to see the balcony. The guy said it was "temporarily closed."

No biggie in itself, but that raised a red flag. He didn't have a good reason, so I wanted to just go out there and at least look at it anyways.

Guess what? The whole fucking place was an over-spilling construction site from the building next door, LoL. Scaffolds and everything! That would have been a disaster!

I would never think of singing up to rent a place long-term before I went around and made sure every single thing worked. Lights, doors, tv, bed, ac, and most importantly, water temp/pressure. Ideally I'd try to stop by at different times, too. Morning for sure.

Be fussy. You'll be living there.

yeah definitely stay in a guesthouse for a few nights and explore the area before committing to renting anywhere, plus all the pictures you will find online are of the place when it was first built, some places might have run down dramatically since then depending on the previous tenants,
and as mentioned before you should deffo check out vlads thread on here....

Join the Facebook groups named something like "Phnom Penh housing" etc. Always shared rooms and single units for rent.

Also, Murray's Place isn't what it used to be but I think still does 1 month contracts. Studio to 2 bedrooms, over by Olympic market. It will do while you find a 6month - 1 year place. Look at Boeng TomPun, Russian Market, bkk3, khan Duan Penh
