ASEAN considers World Cup bid
ASEAN considers World Cup bid
Asean is planning a sensational bid to host the World Cup, but what are the realities of bringing this footballing fiesta to our backyard?

I thought this was a well written article with lots of relevant info. Co-hosting the WC w/ 10 nations is pretty ambitious but with 20 years to prepare it could be done. I won't be holding my breath though.

I mean seriously, what moron even considered this?ali baba wrote:Asean is planning a sensational bid to host the World Cup, but what are the realities of bringing this footballing fiesta to our backyard?
OK, let's fuck the poor more, they have no decent hospitals, no decent schools or universities, no decent infrastructure, their governments treat the country like a warehouse for their private business, gross human rights abuses...
Good idea! let's save them with soccer! Morons.
Did this come from the Aussie think-tank that's sending refugees to Cambodia?
Fucktards.

Well, ASEAN is a big organization... including some developed and semi-developed countries.

Re: ASEAN considers World Cup bid
Thanks for posting the article ali baba. IMHO Fifa being the corrupt entity that it is have got it all wrong with regard to World Cup venue choices since South Africa, which was a predictable abject failure in so many ways. Selecting, ( as in who offered the most bribes ), Qatar and Russia as future venues has just perpetuated the trend. I think when I watched the announcement the Russian delegation jumped out their seat a few seconds before Blatter announced them as winners.
If they want to develop football in Asean how about Fifa putting serious cash into school pitch facilities, youth development, coaching, academies etc etc. I'm sure a 1% cut in the Fifa travel and entertainment budget could go a hell of a long way for proper sporting facilities for kids in Cambodia.

Re: ASEAN considers World Cup bid
It actually makes sense. Asean countries are geographically all pretty close. The need to upgrade or build stadiums would mean no huge white elephants left over (what will Qatar do with ten 50 000+ capacity stadiums?!). Bangkok, Nonthaburi City, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Phnom Penh, Saigon, Hanoi, Rangoon, Manila, etc. It would mean that no stadiums would have to built in tiny towns that lack the need for such stadiums or the infrastructure to support them (or the spike in visitors). If you ask me, it makes way more sense than Qatar. All they would need to do is upgrade a few stadiums, which costs very little. And travel times would be pretty good.

Yeah, who needs decent hospitals? A stadium for 30 days is way more important...Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote:It actually makes sense. Asean countries are geographically all pretty close. And we all know that all the citizens will benefit, right?
One corrupt body sub-letting to other corrupt bodies. Disgusting.

Who really benefits from these events Vlad? Of course the locals would benefit, but yes, we all know higher ups will benefit more (it's the same in the west so should come to no surprise). Still, locals would be immensely proud to be on the world stage for once. Hosting the world's grandest event would also bolster their confidence and open them up to the world. It would also bring increased scrutiny (albeit momentarily) from the world's press on corruption and all the shortcomings of SEA countries you're thinking of.

Re: ASEAN considers World Cup bid
What's so funny? The west had a hard-on finding any problem they could think of with the Sochi olympics. Remember OD saying they would never finish on time and there would be buildings falling down or a terrorist attack? The same happened for the Beijing olympics. Exposes on abused workers, displaced people etc. But as usual, the media (and it's audience) has a very short attention span so a lot of these stories are soon forgotten. Still, for at least a few months these countries would be in the limelight. Would it shake these countries to their core and make the proletariat rise? I doubt it Vlad, but I guarantee every Cambodian (or Thai/Viet and so forth) would be immensely proud to host the world's largest sporting event.
No comment about FIFA though... Oh yeah, and they'd have to let all the ASEAN countries into the tournament, so they'd have to expand the number of teams...

Re: ASEAN considers World Cup bid
You seriously think any coverage of corruption would be tolerated?
FIFA is totally corrupt, good thing Cambodia isn't, right?
Two bedfellows get it on and you expect them to tolerate media talk about corruption?
LOL
