if you dont want to get beat, dont go round trying to steal peoples bikes, its not as if it was just a purse or a wallet, a bike to some people is their livelyhood and probably couldnt afford another, maybe

I can understand the victim of theft wanting to dole out some punishment to the perp but what I find bizarre is the way that bystanders revel in participating. It's hard for me to imagine a situation where I see a man being beaten and think to myself "hey maybe I'll join in and kick this guy in the head a few times."

The most obvious observation - Asia in general - (many parts of the globe) you have this mentality of
"High Ground Justice" It's really just basic ole Mob Mentality...where the mob feels a sense of moral justification for stoning a suspect...hanging a suspect...neck-tying a suspect... Now, my comments are not sympathy based...but hypocrisy based ! Those who throw the 1st kick are often the most corrupt.

To most of us, a bike gets stolen, we buy another. We may have to finance it, but we'll get by, and we are generally earning more than the average Khmer.
To a poor Khmer, losing the moto is almost like a death sentence. The psychological effects of extreme poverty in Cambodia's history also has to be taken into account.
