Now that the military is calling the shots in Thailand...

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I am referring to HIGH ranking generals and up, not ur foot soldiers,

Never been to the casinos on Vietnamese border, only the ones i mentioned,an they usually have thai dealers and the other employees in the hotels/rest, cleaners are locals. Still i would think a major source of income for the local governments.

As for mafia , Nakorn Sri Thamarat is the home for hit men, Mostly ex military soldiers.

how? by taxes they find ways around and which aren't properly collected? or revenue they bring local businesses that do the same in regards to tax?

as long as taxation doesn't really exist here no business is a good source of gov't income unless it has direct gov't ties.

My favourite city in Thailand. Awesome beaches close by with little Thai resorts on them. Haven't been there for a couple of years but it was unusual to see a farang a week where I was staying. Nightclubs there were very cool, 2000 plus punters going hard and didn't seem to mind me in their midst. My good friend who lives there is pretty well connected in the city and is ex military so that may have had something to do with my acceptance. People were openly carrying guns in the clubs but I never felt unsafe. Good times.

Statistics from the Poipet International Checkpoint show the number of people passing through the border crossing per day had declined from an average of about 1,500 prior to the coup to about 700 yesterday.

“Business activity has slowed since fewer tourists and casino visitors have been travelling. They usually come with money to spend in our country, so when they do not come, it makes business harder for people here,” he said.

A sustained lull in the number of Thai gamblers has already resulted in one casino operator folding its business in the border town of Pailin.

Head of the National Council for Peace and Order,
on 30 May 2014, 21.30hrs

Roadmap of the NCPO:
1) Phase 1: The first phase will involve efforts to achieve national reconciliation as soon as possible, at least within two to three months. In addition to security operations, a reconciliation center will be established for central and rural reforms paving the way for the second phase. We will begin in all areas starting from family units upwards to villages, sub-districts, districts and provinces. The NCPO has assigned the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to be responsible for holding dialogue between all sides to ensure a successful second phase. A reform committee will also be set up to pave the way for a confrontation-free second phase. There is no restructuring of any agencies, no request for monetary payment, or any proposal of amnesty.

2) Phase 2: A provisional constitution is being drawn up by NCPO’s legal team. A legislative council will be established to select an interim Prime Minister, appoint cabinet members to administer the country, and draft a new constitution. A reform council will also be established to resolve existing conflicts, with solutions that can be accepted by all sides. This will probably take approximately one year. It could be longer or shorter depending on the situation and cooperation from all sides. If the situation returns to normal, and a successful reform and national reconciliation and social harmony have been achieved, we will move to the third and final phase.

3) Phase 3: A general election under a democratic system which is legal and accepted by all sides. We will modernize existing rules and regulations in order to achieve a just legal system ready for the globalization age so that decent, honest people will be in the administration of our country that will carry out good governance.

The original flare up a few years back was an effort by the Thai yellows to use it as a nationalistic rallying point to build support and unity within their ranks in the post-coup political environment. So long the yellows (and their army buddies) feel they have the upper hand in Thai politics, I don't think they'll feel the need to resort to playing the Preah Vihear card again. Loosely speaking, Preah Vihear is Thailand's Koh Tral.
