Re: How to make CEO a really friendly forum?
I agree that Cambodian voices are needed here, As far as being friendly goes that depends on the post.
There is definately room for a wide range of experience and opinions, but if someone writes bullshit I'm going to call them on it irregardless of where they come from. This notion of friendly is related to my posts in the Cambodian section about how Khmers see conversation as a bonding experience rather than an exchange of information.

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I couldn't agree more. Please i see conversation as an exchange of information. This is a reason i am sticking around.taabarang wrote:I agree that Cambodian voices are needed here, As far as being friendly goes that depends on the post.

I think this is a great IDEADuncan wrote:Perhaps CEO should have a '' Personals '' column . I'm sure hundreds , if not thousands of Cambodian girls will join just to find a rich barang who will marry them and rush them to a overseas country and live happily ever after.
samouth could do translations and earn some extra $$ and buy his parents a car
an all those not living in asia could find prospective wives/gf/sleeping partners
not to mention
think of the numbers that would be generated for google!!
Good call Duncan!!!
BTW isn't it Cambodian EXPATS online ( or is that Overseas?) LOL
Guys never forget this;
its a go dam forum an for entertainment don't take it serious
WE all come from different walks of life and all come to CEO for various reasons

A great idea, Richard it is an ex-pats forum but having many locals invited and welcomed can enrich our experience.
Maybe helping some find a bridge into a more integrated lifestyle.
In my experience, ex-pats who only talk to ex-pats live a very insular lifestyle. Ex-pats who try to integrate have a much more enriched experience.
but let us treat everyone as individuals, OK cut some a little slack for language or cultural reasons, but no need for positive discrimination, imho

Maybe we need an Introduction to Western Humour for Cambodians thread ? Explaining irony and sarcasm and second degree and how not to forget that this is just a forum, and why getting criticized doesn't make you lose face here, so don't act all butt hurt.phuketrichard wrote:this is this is the main problem when non speakers post,

Wait, that not just for Cambodians, since there are also one or two westerners who don't seem to grasp this stuff either.

If we're going to give Richard a gift as Samouth suggests, I'll contribute to buy the missing letter "d" for your keyboard PR.
Great idea and I hope it happens, I'd like to be reading more about what Cambodians think than what expats think Cambodians think on issues that are relevant to either expats or Cambodians. Should make the forum far more interesting even if it takes the odd bit of extra effort occasionally.
Prahkeitouj and Samouth seem to be picking it up pretty fast in their own way.phuketrichard wrote:this is this is the main problem when non speakers post,

Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.
Re: How to make CEO a really friendly forum?
I think it is great to have local posters here. I have not had much of a chance to interact with either of you yet, but hope to some day.Samouth wrote:I have been on CEO quite awhile and really enjoy being apart of it. Apart from improving my English, i have learned about what i was clueless before. I have never felt of being discriminated or attacked as a local, but received a lot of appreciation from my takes and contributions. I am thinking what can i ( as well as you all) do more as a member to help make it a really friendly forum for everyone? I will talk to my friends to join and you guys will have more inputs from local beside just me and little salary.
K440 has Jesse101 but for the most part they treated her as a caged monkey which they could poke at with sticks as they tried to get reactions from her. Not to mention all the sexual harassment from Chuck Wow, some of the most underlying racist attitudes I have seen on that board were exhibited on Jesse's thread. AndyinAsia being one of the nastiest in his attitudes to her.
You guys come across as being more "real" here which is good -- willing to contribute and not just seek out attention.
I am not sure how Khmers interact with each other online as I neither read Khmer nor read facebook, but western forums do tend to have a lot of conflict. It is part of western style to challenge each other. The idea (often wrongly) that people are anonymous sometimes causes even worse behavior. In smaller local forums like this people usually can move on or resolve their differences over a beer or two. In very rare cases it can get really nasty.
I do think that if you expect everything and everyone to be "friendly" all the time, or if you expect special treatment just because you are a local, you will be disappointed.
Some posters are already complaining about this .. "PhuketRichard" from another forum wrote:
"Will get grief for this i am sure. since CEO has taken on two HIGH Cambodian posters. Things have changed now. You need to watch what you say for fear of irritating the powers that be because they are so happy to have Khmers posting there whereas there are none here ( males that i know of) and they don't want to lose them. I just find it hard not to call out theses guys out as it seems they have led very sheltered lives and don't know much which means half of their posts are asking "what does that mean". But they want come across as they are experts on Cambodia, but in reality dont know as much as many, but also think their beliefs are correct. Plus they are getting into backslapping these guys which i hate as much here as there.
"
I have no idea if his comments are accurate or not (personally I find them a bit harsh).
That said -- don't expect everyone to meet your expectations here. As a westerner dominated forum people will probably expect you to be the ones to adjust more.
Alternatively if you guys find it too rough sometimes maybe admin can make a "Warm Fuzzy Bear" folder where zero argument or heated discussion is tolerated.
Online forums can be shocking for those not used to them.
I think it would be great if you could bring more locals here and we can share and learn from each other. But if people expect special treatment, they might be disappointed.
Cheers,
RD
