Is this too much?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Is this too much?

Post by Captain Steve Rogers »

Has Cambodia reached it's boiling with freedom of expression? recently the PhnomPenhPost published an article stating that a Government spokesman has urged the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Telecommunications to punish people who insult or defame government officials. What do you guys think will happen?

While there is plenty the government could be criticized for, the online comments that defame them are for the most part ignorance and stupidity, so they shouldn't get too bothered about them.

Some people express themselves in good light why not right? regardless of what is said the internet has always been a mean of expression.

I think that with no legal guarantees of freedom of speech... and a weak legal system... you get persecution. I also think that the best way to avoid persecution is simply not to do things like malign individual governmental officials and go for the government as a whole instead.

Defamation is always ignorance and stupidity.

It's when the truth is labelled defamation that the BS starts, and in Cambodia only money decides which is which.

Only a cretin would be happy with that.

How are they going to deanonymize all the critics from Long Beach?

Agreed, but it seems that the comments that are bothering them are the old Pol Potist "Khmer Body - Youn Head" ones.

They can't, but what's the point anyway? Those critics are about as dumb, ignorant and uneducated as they come. Unfortunately there are people (foreign and local) here who are just as dumb and swallow that nonsense. Like I was trying to say, there's no point in trying to silence them, it won't work. Engaging them in debate won't either, as anyone who has ever read the comments on KI media will know. It's just a clusterfuck of retarded-ness.
