Re: Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand
Ex-Penh man, If I remember correctly I was living on about $450+ to $650 per month. Life was much cheaper in the Penh then and my needs were simple which should become clearer in my next post. In any case I have never felt the need for wealth, ostentatious or otherwise in my whole life. I figure it was $3/per day for a room, and about $5/per day for food. Later when I had realized my marketable value, 10 years of teaching high school in the US(French, German, and English) plus a TEFL I went for a higher paying position. But in those days there weren't as many openings as today and I still had money saved from my initial job in Korea-around $2000 as a pillow to fall back on. I drank, but bought my beer mostly at mom & pop stores
{hang chap houii) and only went to the foreign bars from time to time. I wasn't a player with the working girls(fear of AiDSwas very big and very real in those days) and sought out the company of like-minded foreigners. I still hadn't learned real Cambodian, at least beyond the rudimentary social greetings and bargaining expressions and I knew that this was on my on unwritten list of things to do.

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Re: Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand
I was getting by on $500 per month staying in nice rooms for like $5 per day, eating local food, and enjoying a few beers. I can still see that anyone on a real strict budget could actually do a room and food for like $10/day, or $300 per month, if teetotal. The question is if you consider that living?
Cambodia has great deals for those who know how to secure a bargain. Some people are too lazy to seek them out. You should be able to have a pretty OK time for like $700 per month if you stay put in 1 place.

Re: Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand
Update.
The ice cream van boss dude guy reneged on the caravan part of the deal so as to make it much less attractive financially to be your local jovial creepy ice cream man. After an interview last week I've got a gig with a domain broker selling TLD's from the BHP building in the city. Amazing office over looking the swan river all the way to the southern suburbs. Not huge money, but can make it work if I sell a couple of domain names a day as the commision isn't too shabby. Problem is, I fucking hate manipulating people and talking them into shit, I left that a long time ago.
What's kinda funny is they employed me on the strength of what I was doing over ten years ago and I know fuck all about TLD's, SEO's, crawlers, backlinking.......so they are going to pay me for a week of training then let me loose on the business community.
I'm goona fuckin hate it.

Not sure about that one, Strop. Only just back in the country and pretty much no nothing about what's going on about anything. Might keep it that way.

'They' were starting the public comment part of that as we were passing through - the public were not thrilled.Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote:Not sure about that one, Strop. Only just back in the country and pretty much no nothing about what's going on about anything. Might keep it that way.

Not passionate either way as it's been 20+ years since I lived there and only use Perth as a gateway or to visit friends/family. What does interest me though is the sycophantic news media that always chooses 'pro' speakers who are professionally dressed and perhaps suspiciously a little too well groomed, whereas the 'nays' are always selected from a shallow gene pool of welfare bogans that wouldn't seem out of place being interviewed by Sam Newman.

I know we have a good and effective system of personal recognition in the CEO Karma thingy but Strop, you, sir, get a beer credit, to be redeemed at any reasonably priced establishment, on our first meet.StroppyChops wrote:Not passionate either way as it's been 20+ years since I lived there and only use Perth as a gateway or to visit friends/family. Re: Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand
rent can be chopped down a lot and so can food. Both could save you a lot of money...But if you want to run AC a bunch well there goes a huge percentage of 1000 dollar budget.
