Come Volunteer in a Phnom Penh Orphanage for $300USD!

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Come Volunteer in a Phnom Penh Orphanage for $300USD!

TWO WEEKS WITH ROOM AND BOARD - $300

Fall in love with a group of orphans at a unique orphanage in Phnom Penh. These youngsters - age 8-15 - attend school but also study and perform the classical and folk dances of Cambodia, an artform that nearly vanished during the brutal reign of the Khmer Rouge. The regime nearly wiped out all trace of the traditional arts in Cambodia, dance in particular. One survivor (see her story), is now the director of this orphanage. The resident children give public performances weekly, thus learning a skill and helping the revival of the arts in Cambodia. Volunteers are primarily needed to interact with the kids and teach them English, but knowledge and appreciation of dance are a big plus.

As an ELI Abroad volunteer, you'll live in a guest house centrally located in an area of Phnom Penh popular with backpackers and budget travelers. When you're not working, you can explore this lively city, relax in its many cafes and restaurants. On weekends, ELI Abroad's coordinators can help you arrange trips to visit the famed Angkor Wat, Cambodia's stunning ancient temple complex; boat rides up the Mekong River; jungle and beach excursions - and lots more. Past volunteers raved about their Cambodian experience!

I don't know if "fall in love with a group of orphans" is the best way to phrase that, given Cambodia's history of people who have been involved in orphanages here over the years, cough, David Fletcher, cough.

And these bastards pick you up at the airport to make you feel welcome, then don't help you get back the airport when you leave. What's up with that?

These "pay to volunteer" plans make me angrier a time goes by - what an absolute scam.

I recently discovered the "Don't create more orphans" campaign on the back of tuktuks, sponsored in part by UNICEF, USAID, and others:

Makes sense to me. Even as a church missions director I couldn't support child sponsorship programs.

Our business kicks more 20% of work effort straight back into the community to teach our staff that compassion requires action... what's your point?
