Smart iMessage and Facetime

Post by khmerhamster »

I left Cambodia for a few weeks last month and when I returned and reinserted my Smart sim to my iPhone the phone failed to register with FaceTime and iMessage.

My previous experience was that this took a few days to re-register the number on apples servers but after a week it still wasn’t registered.

Today I contacted smart to see if they could do something on their end. Their response:
For iMessage and Favetime service is disabled and no longer available.
I then asked why…
Because it is a money-cutting service and annoying to consumers, the Ministry requires it to close.
I didn’t see any announcement about this, but this info is direct from Smart customer service. We can still use the services linked to our email addresses but no longer with phone number.

Anybody can confirm that they have the same experience?

Sorry, maybe my message wasn’t totally clear.

iMessage and FaceTime can be linked to a phone number, or email address (or both). It’s the linking to a smart number which apparently no longer is supported. My FaceTime still works but all calls now originate from my email address, and no longer from my phone number.

So what this means (I think) is…if someone only has your phone number and not email address then they will not be able to contact you by iMessage or FaceTime. I suspect that if they try to send a message to your phone then they will get charged an international SMS fee, instead of free iMessage.
