Re: Former Cambodian Member of Parliament murdered in BKK

Not necessarily dumb - maybe just skipped his local history classes.
Given who they possibly/probably were - your average normal hitman would quite reasonably believe the assurances from the people who ordered the hit that they were absolutely capable of covering his arse when he got back here.
But with a bit of history under his belt he would have known that these same employers are the worlds greatest creative geniuses when it comes to playing the "Setting Up the Fall Guy" game.
Stooged.
It is going to be interesting to watch how they spin the story to tie up the poor sucker this time around.
"Lone wolf nutter"? "Shadowy foreign forces"? "The opposition's well know predeliction for assisted suicide in very public places"?
(apparently the shooters 2nd job was as a nurse - who would have known?)
Or the nice easy clean JFK /Chut Wutty routine again - the shooter gets shot and the story dies right there. Full stop.

Re: Former Cambodian Member of Parliament murdered in BKK
He is charged with premeditated murder and firearm-related crimes. After hearing the charges, he confessed.
The shooting took place on January 7, and Ekkalak was arrested the next day in Battambang, Cambodia.
Ekkalak, a former Petty Officer First Class, was a technician with the Naval Electronics Department and commander of the 8th artillery unit. He graduated from the Naval Rating School but was discharged in 2023 for being absent without leave. He had also been detained for disciplinary issues in 2021 and 2022.
He was arrested without the murder weapon. Police found that 30,000 baht was transferred to his account on the day of the shooting. He used 22,000 baht to repay a police officer after pawning his gun. After the shooting, another 30,000 baht was sent to his account. Police are investigating whether the money is linked to the murder. The police officer denied any involvement.
Authorities are also looking for a Cambodian suspect, Kimrin Pich, who allegedly identified Lim Kimya to Ekkalak. Kimrin traveled to Thailand on the same bus as Lim Kimya and fled to Cambodia on a flight after the attack.

[Update] Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn Wongsiripreda, chief of the Metropolitan Police, confirmed that Ekkalak has confessed to all charges, and his statements match the evidence, including CCTV footage and chat messages.

Suspect in assassination of former Cambodian MP admits to receiving ฿60k
Ekkalak explained that he took the job from someone who had helped him when he was in trouble and dismissed from navy service. His benefactor provided financial support and was always available for advice.
He denied receiving any payment for the job and said he accepted it to repay the favor.
When asked whether the person who ordered the shooting was a civilian, government official, or former government official, Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn said Ekkalak stated that the benefactor was a civilian.
Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn noted that the suspect is sleep-deprived and confused, unable to recall certain details. He said the police are being patient. While some aspects of the investigation are clearer, others are still uncertain due to the suspect's condition. However, most of Ekkalak's statements align with the evidence, though some details still need verification.
When asked if the person who ordered the shooting was Thai, Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn said the police could not provide that information yet.
The chat messages revealed that Ekkalak was initially reluctant to accept the job but eventually agreed after persuasion. They also showed that details about Lim Kimya, such as his clothing and locations, were sent to Ekkalak in Thai.
Regarding the Cambodian suspect, Kimrin Pich, believed to be the spotter, Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn said the interrogation hasn't reached that point yet.
When asked about the 60,000 baht sent to Ekkalak on the day of the shooting, which was partly used to retrieve the gun used in the killing, Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn said Ekkalak has provided some details, but further clarification is needed.
Ekkalak also stated that he never traveled to Cambodia before the shooting. Afterward, he crossed into Cambodia based on instructions from a person he does not know, before being arrested in Battambang.

https://world.thaipbs.or.th/detail/susp ... -60k/56117The alleged assassin of former Cambodian opposition MP Lim Kimya has claimed that he was offered 60,000 baht by an unnamed individual for the hit, according to Pol Maj-Gen Atthaporn Wongsiripreeda, commander of Metropolitan Police First Division.
The suspect, Ekaluck Paenoi, was questioned for about two hours today at the Chana Songkhram police station in Bangkok, after being extradited from Cambodia.
Ekaluck claimed that he was approached by the individual, whose identity was not disclosed by the police, the day before Kimya’s arrival in Bangkok on Thursday, but he initially rejected the offer.

The problem is that the Cambodian secret police is populated by the descendants of those who think it is a good idea not to speak up when their superiors ask if anyone has better ideas. Because those who spoke up were killed along with their families by Angkar.KunKhmerSR wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 12:53 pm So in a region where most people look relatively similar they picked an unusually tall guy and an unusually fat guy for a 'secret' assassination plot.....genius

Re: Former Cambodian Member of Parliament murdered in BKK
The gunman who killed a former Cambodian opposition MP in inner Bangkok last week refused to reveal the mastermind behind the assassination out of fear for his family's safety, according to police.
Pol Maj Gen Atthaporn Wongsiripreeda, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1, said on Sunday that Ekkalak Pheanoi was questioned until about 10pm on Saturday. He confessed to killing the Cambodian but refused to identify the mastermind.
According to the police division commander, the 42-year-old former marine admitted that he was the hitman who killed Lim Kimya in Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok and was captured on CCTV footage at the crime scene and along his escape route last Tuesday.
“He refused to give in-depth information… and feared that such information would affect some party,” Pol Maj Gen Atthaporn said.

Suspect in Lim Kimya’s murder is reportedly Cambodian politician’s brother
read the full story,A Cambodian man wanted by Thai police in connection to the murder of a former Cambodian opposition lawmaker in Bangkok last week is the brother of a politician who initiated legal proceedings that led to the dissolution of the country’s main opposition party in 2017, according to Radio Free Asia.
The suspect, identified as Pich Kimsrin, is believed to be the so-called “spotter” in the murder of Lim Kimya, a former MP of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
CCTV footage shows who Thai police believe to be Pich Kimsrin at the scene of the murder but his current whereabouts are unknown and it is unclear if Cambodian officials have initiated an investigation into him.
...
A review of publicly available information by RFA reveals that Pich Kimsrin was the deputy head of the administration running the Phsar Kandal market in Phnom Penh, according to a since-deleted post on the market’s Facebook page.
It said one of Pich Kimsrin’s Facebook accounts shows that he started his career as a journalist for a pro-government news outlet called Fast News Daily, where he wrote sports and entertainment stories that have since been deleted from the news site.

Re: Former Cambodian Member of Parliament murdered in BKK
The police have requested an arrest warrant for Cambodian national Ly Ratanarasmey, also known as Somwang Bamrungkit, 43, for allegedly ordering the killing of Lim Kimya, a former Cambodian opposition MP, who was shot dead in Bangkok.
Ekkalak "Sergeant Em" Paenoi, a former navy officer who admitted to killing Lim, claimed that Lee was the mastermind.
Interpol, at the request of Thai police, has also issued a red notice for Pich Kimsrin, a 24-year-old Cambodian accused of acting as a spotter for the gunman.

Mr HM pointed out that the Thai police have classified the motive behind former opposition MP Kimya’s killing as “personal conflict”.
He also highlighted the swift response by Cambodian police to arrest the suspected killer who fled to the Kingdom following a request by Thai police.
He noted that the arrest and extradition of the suspect underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to justice and disproves claims of political conspiracy.
The Premier gave his comment on the Kimya murder, for first time since its occurrence on January 7, while presiding over the “Inauguration Ceremony of Achievements” in Pursat province yesterday.

Overseas opposition politicians, especially former opposition leader Sam Rainsy, have accused Senate President HE and the Cambodian government of masterminding Kimya’s murder.
However, Mr HM said the accusation is illogical, given the action taken by the Cambodian authorities in apprehending the murder suspect Ekkalak Pheanoi, a former Thai marine, when he escaped to Cambodia.
He added that while the Cambodian government has the “ability” to hide and protect the suspect, the suspect was arrested on Cambodia’s territory and later extradited to Thailand in response to the request from the Thai police.
“I would like to ask a question here. Is the government that stupid?” Mr HM stated
