Club Fire Kills 5 People in Bavet city, Svay Rieng, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Those places are often just giant blocks with one entrance and no windows..

Think that sums it up really. If it looks like a fire-trap it probably is.

As for the hotels and guesthouses that don't LOOK so much like fire-traps because they have windows and balconies on to the street - unless you're on the 1st floor, jumping out the window isn't much of an option, so they're not much safer if there's a fire and only one staircase.
I just try not to think about it too much except for the ridiculous idea of tying up some sheets as a ladder - LOL, 2 sheets won't get you far if you're on the 4th floor.

I'd rather break my legs than get burned though, so I'd still jump. Being burned alive is just one of those horrific sounding deaths, though as I understand it most people pass out from oxygen loss before they're burned. So at least you'd be out for the worst of it.

Yep, unless you run toward and jump into the fire you'll be long dead before the fire gets you.

Smoke, lack of Oxygen is the big killer in a fire, not being Bar-B-Qed which happens when you are passed out and can't move to get out. I've crawled at floor height to drag people out of burning buildings because they had stood up.

Your in bed and wake up to find smoke and fire. First thing, don't set up, second roll off the bed into the floor, third then access the situation and your options/exiting.

This is probably the best news I've ever heard about fires.

Agree. So might as well roll over and go back to sleep.

You can jump in case you can find the window or door, but this building is no window. Will you go up stair or go dow stairs then? I think you should keep one bottle of water to keep your shirt wet for closing your nose better than break your legs. :p
