I think the rule of thumb is to have at least 6 months of living expenses in readily accessible cash. But you need to have back up plans, and then another back up plan for that plan. Imagine the worst case scenario - you lose access to your cash - the bank locks you out - you lose your credit debit card etc.
Its best to have several ways to get cash and also to have a nice little stack with you too.

I believe I was rather fortune. I met my wife on my third visit to Thailand and within a couple years but before moving permanently bought a Mazda 2 and built an 110 sq m home which I paid cash for.
My fixed costs, insurance, electric, phones, cable, internet etc come to less than $300 monthly now but maintenance on the home and car are starting to rear their ugly heads.
I kept most of my assets in Canada only to watch the dollar devalue by 1/3 over the past 12 years.

Had equal to about 90k usd that were invested for dividends giving me roughly 700$/month passive income and on top of that 10k in cash.
(Back when my currency was strong that is, today it only hold about 65% of the value to the dollar compared to when i moved here which suck really hard)
In hindsight i wish i was a bit older and mature when i moved here as that would have made me able to make wiser decision then i did back then which cost me and my future self allot of money

Pennies.
If you havn't been flat arse broke in Cambodia you have never been to the Cambodia that most Cambodians come from.
...but most people here have no desire to ever visit that country anyway. They like stay somewhere else.
(fair enough)

I first arrived in Cambodia in 2006 with around $1,200 in cash, planning for a cheap two-week holiday. Instead, I got a job and ended up staying for 15 years. Over time, I managed to save six months' worth of salary, along with enough for an airfare home, which gave me a sense of security. During the covid days, I returned home to meet the requirements for my pension. This year, I’ll be visiting Cambodia for a couple of weeks on vacation, but I’m planning a six-month stay in 2026 and perhaps longer after that. I'll pack a lot of cash for that as well as pension deposits.
