Eat much you fat bastards? Poll.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

You can survive on a dime or live like a king. It all depends on your budget. Eating local is relatively cheap. Eating western can get expense.

Regarding local food, there is more to the local cuisines then street food. There are nice seafood places, BBQ and soup, restaurant serving local dishes. Most of these places are not gear toward the expat community. The better ones are outside the tourist districts, located in more local neighbourhoods. There are different levels of local restaurant. Some very fancy places catering to the better off locals. Other for the working class.

We don't eat out much, but when extended family comes to town from the province, we always go out for a good feed of local food. Last time I was there, a group of us went to all-you-can-eat BBQ and soup place in the neighborhood. For 5 adults and 6 teenagers, the bill came out to be about $120. Great choice of seafood, meats, vegetables etc. No blood and guts. For the extended family that was considered pricey. For me it was great value. Would of cost me north of $500 back home. Great times had by all. Needless to say, the extended family seems to visit a lot when I'm in KoW.
Soon they will move in for good. I'd start a poll for that... :beer3:

There's a plan in the works for that. One of the niece in the province is currently in grade 11. She has been consistently at top of her class.

We are a family of 4 with a rented four bedroom house. There is talk that when she graduate and attend university, she will be staying with us. The gf asked if I was ok with the idea. She also mentioned, her brother doesn't really have a lot money. They will borrow to send the kid to school but might not have extra for her room and board.

I told my GF not to worry. As long as we have a spare room, she is more than welcome to stay with us free of cost. Really not a big burden for me. I'm already paying for rent and utilities. We cook at home, so no real major increase with one extra mouth to feed.

I eat local food sometimes, but it's not often very satisfying, especially if you have to do it all the time. I don't have to and I prefer eating Indian, Lebanese, French or even American style food because I have that choice. I don't eat a huge amount but I prefer to enjoy food instead of forcing down blood cubes and chicken knuckles just to survive. 💀
Agreed, I cook foods at home. Once a while if I wanted to then order something to eat. I find it every cheap and easy to buy groceries and cook at home. At least I get the control of what I eat. What I do appreciate is that in KOW it cheap and $100 USD goes a long way here compared to the states.

I eat 1 meal a day which I do at work on the weekdays. Eat that one meal per day on the weekends out. So $20 per week.

If only you had access to a decent hotel restaurant... :stir:

Hmm, I get bored very quickly. I will never understand the folks that go to the same three restaurants every day.

Moi aussi, but my concern is going to an unknown place and paying for lousy food, so once I find aplace that's good value for money, I tend to go there often. You reviews are useful. This place sounds very good, but I couldn't afford to go there often. I often eat breakfast on Zombie St (172) and for other meals I usually cook at home, mostly beef/chicken curries, omelettes or fish. I probably spend too much on drink, around $30/week.
