US politics topics and CEO

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

US politics topics and CEO

Post by Username Taken »

So, what's the solution here?
What if we were to ban discussion of US politics?
Discussion of US politics starts arguments and ill feeling among members. Deters others from joining the discussion, creates cliques and grudges. It doesn't change anything on the ground in the US. So, what's the point?

Hey, @General Mackevili, what if we were to put US political threads into a new hidden forum where people could opt in and fight it out, while the rest of us could just ignore the divisiveness?
. . . there's someone in my head, but it's not me . . .

Maybe a one time opt-in (if they get cranky because the content is not to their liking this week, they don’t get to opt back in again)

if someone doesn't want click on a US based thread, ( or comment) nobody is forcing them to> correct?

Opinions, like assholes,
Everyone has one

we have already signed up here, why have to opt in for specific threads?

The forum was set up by Americans and has always had a focus on the USA. I didn't notice any mods complaining when Trump won, censoring bad news about the upcoming disaster or hiding it seems rather disingenuous.

I am fortunate at this time of my life - i can stand back and say with confidence and detirmination that i not going to let the next chapter of history take up very much space in my head.

It is going to be putrid >> and ps that is reflected here... already.

I don't need any cencorship or hidden-away opinions ( but a reasonable suggestion anyway, Clutch). I have always had my own filters.

I personally am simply just not going to do that to my heaven-given short oportunity-filled life. ( << that's a full stop)

This has been discussed on here before, and it's not to 'hide' anything, it would really just be for people who have no interest in US politics to be able to mute/block having to see it. I generally agree with the stance of, 'if you don't want to read something, simply don't,' but since this is a site clearly focused on CAMBODIA, I can imagine that some would be thankful to have the option to not see it.

And I know you're trying to say that you believe the reason US politics are so regularly discussed on here is because I'm American, but that's obviously not why, lol. Do you think that you, being Irish, would have started this forum and it would have been all about Irish politics? Haha, no way, it's because US politics are the most widely talked about international politics for Westerners, but I think you already knew that. Heck, it's funny, because I just did a forum search for topics started by you with the name of US presidents since CEO was created in the title, VS a search for topics started by you with the names of UK Prime Ministers/Ireland Prime Ministers (Taoiseach?) since CEO was created in the title, and...... guess what?? Well, here are the results, and it looks like you've started SIX topics about US presidents, VS ZERO topics about Irish/UK PMs, lol:

search.php?keywords=harris+higgins+Vara ... mit=Search

search.php?keywords=may+johnson+truss+s ... mit=Search

search.php?keywords=trump+biden+obama&t ... mit=Search

So no, numerous topics about Trump/US politics don't have anything to do with me being American and everything to do with general conversations among Westerners around the globe, duh. And I don't think any of the moderators, nor I, would try to 'hide' anything related to Trump because it paints him in a bad light or whatever you're suggesting.

It's also interesting to see how many times you've mentioned Trump in posts (posts/replies as opposed to starting a new topic) since 2016. You've mentioned Trump at least 434 tiimes on CEO!!! Wow, are you sure you're not Irish-American?! My point is that you yourself have mentioned Trump hundreds of times on here (and correct me if I'm wrong, but each and every time it was anti-Trump, no?), and clearly we've never attempted to stop you from making negative posts about Trump.

search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keyw ... hn+bingham

Anywho, I give literally no fucks about anti-Trump posts/opinions, and I personally would allow topics about anything and everything, but I think it's a valid complaint by some members who would love to see a way to 'mute/hide' topics about Trump since they mainly come here to chat about Cambodia, especially because unlike a lot of other unrelated to Cambodia topics, most adults can join in if they find interesting or scroll past if they don't without much sweat. But since this is a community and everyone in a community has to be willing to make a few compromises here and there, I think it might be beneficial to us all for members to have an option to opt-in or opt-out of section of the forum where more international politics/culture war hot topics could be discussed. And ideally it would be setup in a way where everyone can just opt-in or opt-out themselves without the process of requesting access.

The same could be said for discussions about (just off the top of my head, there are no doubt more) Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, and Thailand vs Cambodia as a place to live. If you want to avoid people arguing and bitching at each other you might as well get rid of the rest of the world section altogether, and there are quite a few other threads that have nothing to do with politics or the rest of the world in general that have devolved into name calling. Those cliques and grudges exist, and will continue to exist, with or without political threads.

Whether we like it or not, US politics affects everyone and is a part of life. For some, it can directly influence their decision to move to Cambodia or whether or not they can even do so. It can be a factor in a lot of discussions about other, seemingly unrelated matters. Discussions-either online or over beers in the bar - about taxes, living on a US pension, taking a wife and kids home with you when you leave, inflation and the cost of living, hostility towards Americans/personal safety have all been part of expat life for as long as I can remember and often comes down to current or future government policies.

I am, or have been, a member on probably around 10 + expat forums over the years. Bitching and arguing has always been a thing on forums. One thing I've always liked and respected about CEO is the attitude - or maybe it's even a policy I'm not sure- that if you're not interested in a thread, don't whine about it, just scroll on.
CEO is one of the few forums that is still thriving and has multiple new posts daily, I think that's worth noting and I personally think it has a lot to do with the ability to have free discussions about almost anything.

This has been said here before, but I don't understand why, if people aren't interested in a particular thread or if it triggers them somehow, they still feel the need to click on it. Instead of creating 'safe spaces', can't people just take some personal responsibility for what they read?

I get what you're saying about this being a 'Cambodia' forum, but isn't that why there's a 'rest of the world' section? We can literally opt in or out just by not going there. I personally don't see how people can complain about being exposed to non-Cambodian topics if they're browsing the rest of the world section, but if it's an issue why not just put a trigger warning or something on that section - 'caution, US politics may be mentioned here' or something?

If a separate section is created with personal opt-in, would those topics and posts still appear on the top of 'New posts' and 'Recent posts'? I gather many members may sit on these or view these firstly before going into the sub-topics. So it's sort of in your face there.

Is there any merit in creating new subtopics along the lines of:

New posts- Cambodia
New posts- Other

Recent posts- Cambodia
Recent posts- Other

NB Cambodia on the top and possible no need then to create a separate section with separate opt-in?
