I have seen people waiting for their suitcase while their Apple device was in it, so the Apple ones are fine. Not sure about others.

Alternatively can also use Apple AirPods. They can also be tracked thru ‘find my’.
The cheap $10 AirPods from the market will also work.

Useful information , but I wouldn’t expect much for $10 , ( the cheap ones )
I myself would never waste the money , $10 for anything “ knocked off” unless it was a gift
For someone I didn’t like ($10item. or would Not buy the real deal because I would definitely lose it somehow ..
I have an apple one now sent thru the mail ..

Those are fine, but crappy cheap ones may have different size batteries that are not allowed, or the batteries may not be up to the standards required (UN Manual of Tests and Criteria Part III Subsection 38.3 if you really want to know) to be allowed on planes. Admittedly still very unlikely to cause a problem, but one day...

None of the GPS trackers like AirPods use an active GPS service that cellphones or cars use, but instead a back channel cell phone app to carry the location information. If there as a phone with the app on (such as the Tile app), it will pick up the signal and relay it.

Apple has their constantly on by default.

The accuracy then depends on the number of running apps in the area.

Since the iPhones are always running in the background and carrying locator information from AirTags, this is why they work so much better.

This is from my most limited understanding.

You get what you pay for.

Re: GPS Tracker (Apple AirTag knockoffs)

I went ahead with my experiment and bought a "HOCO E91" tag - "Compatible with Apple Find My".

Well. Let's say I can now tell why this one cost me just $4.5, while an original Apple AirTag is $30 apiece:
  1. It only claims "10-12 months" battery life. Which probably is sales-speak for "6 months or less". Time will tell. My Apple ones last more than one year, the longest I think reached about 22 months idling in a storage locker before tagging ;-) out. (btw they use the same CR2032 battery type)
  2. It simply Does Not support the second killer feature of Find My which is "Find Nearby" AR-radar mode! The button in the app instead of Find Nearby just becomes Directions to last known / current GPS coordinates in the Apple Maps app, which first off, doesn't work very well in many countries and secondly, doesn't help you locate an item in tall grass or under a sofa, for example.
  3. When told to emit a sound, it can only put out a very VERY weak little "pyep, pyep, pyep". The AirTag is not known to be very loud either but its chirp is significantly louder and more distinguishable in comparison.
  4. It has a dumb little "power button" on the side which you may depress for a couple of seconds by mistake and supposedly it will turn off to save battery / reset ... I didn't get this to work though - it made a beep but kept being findable. Why tf you need an off button on a solid tracking fob is beyond my IQ though.
All in all - you get what you pay for.

I am tempted to send a package to Cambodia with a tracker - because out of three attempts, only one ever arrived - after 6 months of waiting. In fact, the item I sent was a bank card that I had cancelled because it took too long to arrive, and I re-sent another that never arrived. FML
Stay classy na

My bank card was sent by the bank , I ordered it early and had time to wait because
I did not need it urgently ..
My bank card never arrived when I was in no hurry for it . so
after 6 months I had them resend it , not by regular mail (The cheapest way )
But by whatever they pay to send not by post office then it arrived perfectly
Re: air tag or itag
So I got ( got one now ) one from in a package sent to me , now I own it

But If someone opens your package it is theirs .

You can possibly know the last known destination.
I can ask that to the sender ..
I’m trying to find out if I can use this one I have to my advantage in any way ..
Otherwise it’s collecting dust and being useless .
