Well, I guess there's no reason to lock him up since he was always very cordial with you and never tried any scams with you.John Bingham wrote:Good to hear he's not locked up. I always got on ok with him. He never tried any scams on me either.GUS wrote:Seen today in Kampot.
I remember reports of him scoping out homes to see if anyone was there before presumably entering the ones without people home and taking what he pleases.
He's a liar and a thief. Enough said.

That's not going to work for native speakers, as he's American and will be able to recognize native accents.General Chatter wrote:No speak englissh no speak englissh always stops them in their tracks.

Who cares what he recognizes? No English, keep walking.MekongMouse wrote:That's not going to work for native speakers, as he's American and will be able to recognize native accents.
As if Steve was some kind of mystic creature that you have to cast spells on to get rid of. If it doesn't "work" you punch him in the mouth and then voila it works.

Haha okay not sure where you're going with that, but my point was that he will know you're lying. Presumably you say "no english" to be polite. I am just pointing out that he won't fall for it as easily as a scammer from Asia would. If you don't care about being polite (and I count myself in this group) you can just keep walking without saying anything.BOFH wrote:Who cares what he recognizes? That's OK. I know he's lying so we're even on that.MekongMouse wrote:Haha okay not sure where you're going with that, but my point was that he will know you're lying. There's no need to be polite when rejecting fraudsters in my opinion. All with you with treating the general public politely.

I have said this to Steve before.....
It works even better on native speakers....it's the art of saying fuck off without saying fuck off...if they know you speak and you say you cant it fucks with them....especially when he was listing to me speak English for 5 mins beforehand...you should have seen the look in his eyes

Yeah, why would you want to be polite to a known scammer/someone you know is trying to scam you. Whenever I met Wild Turkey or Steve, I'd answer with short, curt answers. They got the message and left me alone.

Re: Scammer Steve in Cambodia
It actually works pretty well to be polite. I've often been approached by junkies etc asking for some spare change for a cup of tea or whatever. When you say "No thank you" it really phases them.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
