Cambodian Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Fishing During Off Season

[CAMBODIA NEWS] Cambodian authorities have launched a crackdown on illegal fishing activities in Kampong Cham province during the off season. The operation, which took place on August 4, 2024, resulted in the confiscation of hundreds of meters of illegal fishing nets and the release of several kilograms of fish back into local waters.

The crackdown was initiated following directives from provincial leadership and the head of the provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. A joint task force conducted the operation in Kang Meas district, targeting illegal fishing practices in lakes, ponds, and former fishing lots along the Mekong River.

Despite the fishing ban during this season, some individuals have been caught using prohibited fishing gear, such as fine-mesh nets, to catch both small and large fish. The authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to fishing regulations to protect and preserve aquatic resources.

During the operation, the task force confiscated various illegal fishing equipment, including:

1. A 5x2x15 meter fishing net at Anlong Kokir Creek in Prek Koy commune.

2. 12 fishing net traps, 620 meters of net fencing, and 180 support poles in O Svay village, Prek Koy commune. Additionally, 15 kilograms of mixed fish species were released back into the water.

3. 9 fishing net traps, 450 meters of net fencing, and 135 support poles at Rong Veng area in Prek Koy commune. Five kilograms of mixed fish species were also released.

The newly appointed head of the Fisheries Administration Cantonment stated that the operation was a collaborative effort involving various local authorities and law enforcement agencies. He also mentioned that this was the fifth such operation conducted in Kang Meas district since the start of the off fishing season.

The provincial governor has instructed fisheries officials to investigate and identify those responsible for illegal fishing activities during the off season. Legal action will be taken against offenders in accordance with fisheries laws.

Authorities hope that these efforts, combined with increased awareness among local communities, will lead to more sustainable fishing practices and help preserve fish populations in the region.
