Small fire on a couple of overgrown vacant plots

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Small fire on a couple of overgrown vacant plots

Post by IraHayes »

Arrived home and saw some thick black smoke and joked to the kids that I hoped it wasn't our house. Got closer and the vacant plots at the end of the street were slowly burning through the reeds and accumulated garbage.
The reeds were well over 3m tall and burn rather well at the base. Anyway it wasn't exactly a raging fire but it was getting close to the last house on the row.
Anyway I had ambled down to be nosey and saw it wasn't too bad so went home and got my 50m hosepipe that I had bought when I got my power washer a few years ago. They were using a short hose and buckets so once we had connected mine I set to and went down the side of the house adjacent to the plot and the fire was slowly working its way along the back wall to the house. That didnt take too long and some guys made some paths through the reeds so we could attack the back wall at an angle rather so the hose would reach further.

Spent most of the time just dampening down the smoldering ashes. The plot is about 50m across the front and 25m deep and at the far end, furthest from the last house is where a lot of garbage had been dumped. I was too busy to take photos at the time but there was a guy with a go-pro on his helmet that came down to see how it was going against the back wall. Maybe there will be some footage on facebook somewhere.

I left my hosepipe with the families at the end of the street as they will be hosing down for a while and they said they will watch it late into the night in case it re-ignites.
All in all a nice little brownie point earning session that hopefully has stored up some goodwill with the affected families for the future.
