Okay and then you're in Trat at the bus terminal. Not sure what exactly you're comparing this option to? Flying to where? If you want to visit Trat, that's obviously the way to go.

Okay, Ko Chang is easily reached from the bus terminal in Trat. But anywhere in Eastern Thailand? I think not, in many cases it would be better to fly from Phnom Penh to Suvarnabhumi and to continue from there. Pattaya (also a popular destination in Eastern Thailand) would be an example, doing that via Trat is a pain.

And anyway, if I was coming all the way from Cambodia to Thailand just for a beach, I'd go to Southern Thailand. If you go to Ko Chang, you could just as well go to a beach in Cambodia or to Phu Quoc.

Well, you're talking aboit NE Thailand (Isaan). Obviously you would take a different road. Actually the road to Battambang is very good now

Maybe change it southeastern Thailand. Trat to Sisaket is quite a trip to make, probably easier straight from Phnom Penh. Not even talking about Ubon...

You're talking about NE Thailand (Isaan). For that one could take NR5 which is in exceelent condition already (as far as Battambang) and cross at Poipet. I understand that can be a busy crossing sometimes, however, unlike Koh Kong which is an easy one.

All true. However, the point remains that as the Cambodian roads are improved from pretty awful to very good, the choices are becoming interesting.
BTW, the road from Koh Kong border to Trat is very nice as well.
Koh Chang offers a lot more than the Khmer islands. And there is Ko Mak and Ko Kood as well. You don't need to go south. Many people like Chantaburi area (not for beaches) and that is an easy drive from Trat.

Or up to Pailin and cross at one of the 2 crossings there, Ban Pakard / Phsar Prum – or Ban Leam / Daun Lem
Ban Leam ) both very relaxed crossings and on to Bangkok via Chantaburi or head to northern thailand
I doubt many are interested in travelling to / thru Issan >>

Looking at the Air Asia website today for flights from Siem Reap to PP, there are free (actually $27) one way flights available on nearly every day from the off (2 May) except for a few of the earliest days. From 31 July, the service ceases to be daily, according to the booking page.
The "free" seat offer was scheduled to finish yesterday.
