From Pepper to Salt: Kampot's Agro-Tourism Offers Unique Experiences for Foreign Tourists
Cambodia News (Kampot): Kampot Province, Cambodia - The Director of the Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism has reported a significant increase in foreign tourist arrivals following the improvement of the COVID-19 situation. In addition to the well-known colonial-era buildings and pepper plantations, the salt fields of Chum Kreal commune in Teuk Chhou district have emerged as a new tourist attraction, drawing hundreds of visitors daily.
According to the director, foreign tourist numbers have been steadily rising, with 8,000 visitors in January 2024, increasing to 12,000 in February, and continuing to gain momentum in March. While the salt fields are not yet fully standardized for tourism, salt field owners along the road have set up restaurants and cafes to cater to visitors seeking to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, including the wind and stunning sunsets.
Under the guidance and attention of Provincial Governor HE Mao Thunin, the Department of Tourism believes that the salt field area of Chum Kreal commune has the potential to become another attractive agro-tourism destination. The location's proximity to the city and the beach grass island, coupled with the upcoming opening of the international tourist port, is expected to further enhance its appeal.
In other news, the Ampil Exhibition Center of Cambodia is set to reopen to visitors in the near future, following its closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to a report from the Department of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation of Kampot Province, the region boasts more than 3,000 hectares of salt fields this year. Favorable weather conditions have resulted in a production of over 20,000 tons of salt as of March 10, 2024. Officials anticipate that Kampot could produce approximately 100,000 tons of salt this year if the weather remains conducive to salt production until the end of the month.
