Expat Youtubers

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I don't have a YT channel, and doubt I ever will, it's not my thing.

I do follow some expat channels though and the YouTubers who talk about it often give various reasons for starting their channels. As a hobby, a way to share their experience with friends and family, a sort of personal journal, and/or a possible source of income.

A lot of them are just as you describe... " plethora of very unimaginative ones where it some dude wandering about talking about rent, utilities, latest visa news, where to buy a sim card, stuff like that. Or the really smug ones which usually involve an 'only farang in the village' type living his best life or whatever."

The thing is though, if you're looking to sell everything you own, quit your job, and move to another country those types of channels are a goldmine of useful information and seem to get the views, which in turn leads to money for the YouTuber. If you read the comments, that's exactly the type of question they get asked all the time too, so it makes sense for them to talk about those things.

That would quite interesting. I only know of one serial killer in Thailand.

There's lots of content in Cambodia alone, I would love to do a story on the owner of the Mexican restaurant who chopped up the lady she owed money to, then kept her body parts in the freezer.
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

Interested and disgusted.

It's a really interesting genre, I am addicted to true crime channels on YouTube.

Why do the two have to be mutually exclusive? Can't I do it for me and for money?
So it was all about you aye :( What about the waiting audience?

Does the content creator have an obligation to continue producing videos for subscribers or viewers if they're not feeling it? I'm not sure he or she does.

I will make the occasional video to preserve the channel's monetization in case I want to revisit YouTube full time in the future though - I'm not writing YouTube off completely.

I'm sure they do as it was their original intent.

So you believe a person should continue to do something they're not enjoying, or don't want to do, because you demand to be entertained? That comes across as a bit entitled and lacking in empathy somewhat, I think.

Was I smug? Was I bragging? Did I waffle? Was I an annoying self-centered prick while making videos? I don't really care, I was doing it for me and not for anyone's approval.

Ah The irony!
