Car accidents - do's and dont's

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Car accidents - do's and dont's

Post by YaTingPom »

Don't try and drive off, you won't get far and it will cost a lot.
Don't move either vehicle until the cops tell you to do so.
Don't rely on Insurance, especially if you live outside of PP. (They won't turn up unless your premium is $500+)
Don't raise your voice. (unless you know exactly what you are doing and are in control)
Don't walk away from negotiations, this isn't a purchasing transaction at the market.
Don't be surprised if they threaten to take you car away and impound it, this is normal. The police want a quick solution too.

Do offer your driving licence and passport copies (they probably won't ask you for your car ID or visa, unless you're a dick)
Do be respectful to the lead cop (there's always one in charge, check his lapels out; the more the better, or worse!) or expect him to be moved aside when someone more senior comes along, that is something you don't want.
Do make sure you check on the other driver and offer them water.
Do take plenty of pictures and point out (if you have one) your dash cam. Also make a note of the time and date.
Do try and sort it out at the side of the road, if practical to do so.

Whatever money is asked at least halve it and then some. The other party also wants to get things sorted as much as you, assuming other vehicle is drivable.

Remember, pedestrians and motos come last in the pecking order but first in the event of an accident, so if you hit them you are automatically at fault, even it is obvious they hit you there's still a chance you will get blamed.
Have you seen when vehicles break down on the road and they put branches out? That isn't out of concern to other road users it's to cover them if someone happens to hit them "See, I put a warning out. Not my fault". True story!

There will be lots of shouting because of the adrenalin and probably anger. Be calm but firm.

Hopefully you will have a Cambodian with you. If not your are royally screwed! :plus1:

Happy motoring. :o
