Bodyguard Unit wrap up Chinese missile training
Samban Chandara | Publication date 20 August 2023 | 21:29 ICT
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) last week trained 127 individuals from the Bodyguard Unit under the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) on skills to check and maintain combat systems and short-range air defence missiles (QW-3), said a Cambodian official, noting that the training is a testament of the ironclad cooperation between the two nations.

The training, conducted at Phnom Srang in Kampong Speu province, was attended by Tang Hao, China’s Military Attache to the Chinese embassy and Bodyguard Unit commander Hing Bun Heang. It concluded on August 17.

In an August 18 statement, the Bodyguard Unit shared that Bun Heang thanked the PLA for providing the training and urged participants to make good of the training they had received to protect Cambodia’s territory integrity, sovereignty, stability and security.

In addition to that, Military Region 4, based in Varin district’s Sre Noy commune of Siem Reap province, is conducting a 30-day SVD live shooting training for 48 trainees starting August 19.

As part of the cooperation, China and Cambodia are often involved in joint military activities. The last big one was the Golden Dragon Military Exercise held from March 23 to April 8, with more than 700 soldiers from both sides attending.

Overview
The KaiShan-1 (also known as the Hong Qi-12) is the first Chinese aerial defense system to feature a phased-array radar, with each variant having a further range than the last.
A typical HQ-12 battery includes one planar passive phased-array radar (PPAR), four launchers preloaded with two missiles each, and 16 additional missiles, along with command-and-control and generator units.[ii]The PLA claims HQ-12 has a single-shot kill probability of 89 percent.[iii]

Differences between the variants are due primarily to different radar units: KS-1 typically uses SJ-212 engagement radar, derived from the Russian 30N6E1 Tomb Stone, which can track up to 50 targets and engage three of them at ranges up to 27 kilometers.[iv]
KS-1A has used two types of engagement radar; the original HT-233 radar has a range of 50 kilometers, and the newer H-200 radar has a range of 70 kilometers and can track up to 100 targets.[v]
Along with using the H-200 radar, KS-1C fires individually-launched, cannister-encased missile rounds instead of paired, rail-mounted missiles; this effectively doubles the number of potential interceptors available in each battery.[vi]
