Zika Virus Alert in Kampong Thom

Cambodia News, (Kampong Thom Province): Please take good care of your children! The Department of Infectious Diseases announced on September 23 that a 7-year-old girl has been diagnosed with Zika virus.

The Department of Infectious Diseases said that the girl who is living in Po Pech village, Baray district, Kampong Thom province, was admitted to Santuk Baray Referral Hospital on September 18. 2023 at 18:25 at the Children's Emergency Department.

The first symptoms were dtected on September 18, 2023: high fever, vomiting and diarrhea. After doctors treated the girl's symptoms, they quickly tested her for dengue, but the results were negative.
On September 19, 2023, the blood test was sent to the Institut Pasteur, and on September 21, 2023, they returned a positive result for the Zika virus.

Like dengue, Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite mostly during the day. Symptoms may include a rash, fever, nausea, muscle and joint pain, and a headache that lasts 2-7 days, but there is often no symptoms. The disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, because it affets the fetus. Zika infection during pregnancy can cause premature births and miscarriages, or the baby may be born with microcephaly and other birth defects.
