Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

National Road Washout Cut Traffic to Mondulkiri

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Mondulkiri Province): On August 2, 2023, the National Road 76A linking Kratie province to Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri province collapsed in the area of Sastra village, Sen Monorom commune, between kilometers 91 to 99, Mondulkiri province.

The traffic was at a halt on the morning of August 2 until a new temporary road was constructed to allow traffic to pass. The collapse of National Road 76A was due to the heavy rainfalls, which also also flooded bridges, villages, and farms in the mountainous area.

Did they just get some heavy plant in and push a load of soil from the other side of the road into the hole and then laid the new road on top of it?
The undamaged side appears to have a slight uphill slope on it and they look to have moved a lot of earth from a good distance from the damaged section and hole, but still, is that really what they've done?

Don't get me wrong here, its a neat and quick fix and it wouldn't surprise me if they've not had to do this before on another section of road in the past. And, at the end of the day, what else could they do tbh.

There does not appear to be much reinforcement under the top surface. The line from Ice cold in Alex about the skin on top of a mouldy rice pudding comes to mind.

They should get the Chinese to build it

UPDATE
The detour has slipped, so no cars please, as only large trucks can get through.

Hundreds of drivers were stuck in a traffic jam yesterday in Mondulkiri – courtesy of a road closure due to heavy rain

According to preliminary reports, hundreds of vehicles were stuck at the intersection of O’Ngei Road and O’Raing District, Mondulkiri Province as the new detour can not be used after heavy rain.

On the morning of August 16, 2023, the Governor of Mondulkiri Province inspected the snarl-up and ordered has a team of excavators to compact the road for cars to temporarily pass through the collapsed road

Large trucks can continue to travel on the new detour, because there are machines waiting to help tow them if they get stuck.

Authorities have asked motorists to avoid the area until the road is operating again.
