Restoring Northern Tower of Trapeang Lpeou Temple
APSARA National Authority Restoring Northern Tower of Trapeang Lpeou Temple
AKP Phnom Penh, August 10, 2023 --
A restoration team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology is restoring the northern tower of Trapeang Lpeou Temple after finishing the restoration project of the southern tower in March 2023, said the APSARA National Authority in a news release on Wednesday.
Ms. Chhun Ratana, an official of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, said that Trapeang Lpeou Temple has three towers that still stand. So the experts spent about five months repairing the southern tower. Then, in April 2023, we started the restoration work of the northern tower to strengthen the temple structure after seeing that the structure was torn apart due to many factors.
In the process of repairing a brick temple, experts began to study the layout of the temple and strengthen the walls to prevent collapse, then clean and seal the adhesive layer to prevent water seepage, making the tower of the temple strong again, the same source added.
Ms. Chhun Ratana added that by the beginning of August 2023, the repair process has achieved about 70 percent. It is planned to complete the restoration project by the end of 2023. Then, we are going to restore the central tower of Trapeang Lpeou Temple for the next project.
After the renovation work, experts expect that the towers of Trapeang Lpeou Temple will stand strong for a long time and be a legacy for the next generations to know and learn.
Trapeang Lpeou Temple (formerly known as Prasat Trapeang Peou), a brick temple with three towers facing the east, was built around 944-968 AD in the 10th century during the reign of King Rajendravarman II.
