Blister Beetle Nightmare: Four Fatalities Serve as a Stark Reminder in Cambodia
The Ministry of Health's Communicable Disease Control Department (CDC) has issued a reminder to the public after four individuals from Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces tragically lost their lives due to the consumption of toxic insects known as blister beetles. This incident serves as a stark warning to avoid consuming unknown insects or plants, as it can have grave consequences.
In a recent post on August 11, the CDC highlighted the severe effects of consuming these insects. "Four individuals in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces have tragically died after consuming toxic blister beetles. Following ingestion, they experienced symptoms such as cold sores, blood vomiting, loss of consciousness, and blood in their urine. The irreversible damage to their kidneys ultimately led to their demise," stated the CDC.
The victims from Preah Vihear province were a married couple who worked together on a farm in Choam Ksan district. According to the director of the provincial health department, Kuong Lo, the wife, aged 56, consumed five blister beetles, while her 58-year-old husband consumed two. Tragically, the wife's symptoms were more severe, and she passed away on the morning of August 5 at the provincial referral hospital. Her husband, who has been transferred to Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital, is currently suffering from kidney problems.
To ensure public safety and prevent further incidents, the CDC urges individuals to contact the 115 health hotline for more information.
