@Pompedup are you at liberty to discuss/inform us of any future upgrades to the water supply in the city or is your work here done?

Bakheng 1 just started production (200 000 m3/day), Bakheng 2 (same capacity) will start by the end of this year. We started the study for another stage of same capacity.
A treatment plant is under construction in Ta Khmau (30 000 m3/day), to be completed next year.
The Phum Prek treatment plant will be extended by 45 000 m3/day, the contract for engineering services was signed yesterday.
Studies will begin soon to add two treatment plants in the east (Niroth / Koh Norea). And studies are on-going for the water supply of the future airport and Ksach Kandal areas.

Outstanding news, I must say. My water pressure during the recent water festival, while due mainly to the huge exodus of people to the provinces, was impressive. While it is currently not at that level it is way more than prior to the water festival and the new plant going online was certainly the cause.
I do a monthly clean outside with a pressure washer and had to switch to a header tank (large dustbin) as the water pressure wasn’t up to the job of keeping the pressure washer fed. With a tap running on full and the full bin at the start it was at about a third full at the end of the clean. My next clean I am hoping to go back to direct feed from the tap. For those wondering the pressure washer “sounds” different when it is even slightly starved of water feed to keep it sufficiently fed.

Finally, I, for one, would welcome more posts from you as it would go some way to negating the “low energy” posting we occasionally get. So now we’ve managed to drag you in I hope you contribute in the more general topics. But, failing that do keep us up to date with how these proposed plants and upgrades are coming on.

Bakheng Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 195k cubic meters per day inaugurated
19 June 2023 Local News

The official inauguration of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 marks a significant milestone in enhancing the water supply capacity of Phnom Penh and Takhmao city in Kandal province. With a remarkable daily capacity of 195,000 cubic meters, the plant’s opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Samdech HE, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The addition of Phase 1 to the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant significantly augments the existing water production capacity of 640,000 cubic meters per day, empowering the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority to meet the growing water demands of the capital city and three communes in Takhmao.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister HE highlighted the plant’s crucial role in fulfilling the increasing piped water requirements of households, high-rise buildings, enterprises, and factories. This momentous project serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving water infrastructure and ensuring access to clean and reliable water sources for the populace.

The construction of Phase 1 commenced in February 2021 and spans an expansive area of 15 hectares. Executed under the expert supervision of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority and consulting services from SAFEGE Consulting Engineers of France, the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 is the largest endeavor in Cambodia’s water infrastructure development.

The financing of this ambitious project involved significant contributions from international entities. The French Agency for Development (AFD) provided $85 million, the European Investment Bank (EIB) contributed $100 million, and the European Union (EU) generously granted $15 million for Phase 1.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 will be supported by an additional $100 million from AFD, complemented by an allocation budget of $80 million from the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority.

The total investment in the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant, encompassing both Phase 1 and 2, amounts to nearly $400 million. As this monumental project comes to fruition, it paves the way for improved water accessibility, fostering sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Phnom Penh and Kandal province.

Why give when it is free? Aka someone else is paying for it. Cambodia is pretty good at getting western countries to ante up for their development.

Part of why I would never survive in mainland China among billion Chinese.

Phnom Penh, the 19th of June 2023 - Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE, Prime Minister of the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, presided over the highly anticipated inauguration of the Bakheng Water Production Facilities Phase 1 of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority. The state-of-the-art facilities have a remarkable production capacity of 195,000 m3/day, significantly supplementing the existing plants of 640,000 m3/day capacity. The total daily treatment capacity now reaches an impressive 835,000 m3/day.

This achievement is a crucial milestone in the Cambodian Sustainable Development Goal No.6, as it ensures access to safe and clean water for over 2 million residents in Phnom Penh Capital and Ta Khmau City. Furthermore, it provides reliable water services to industries, creates job opportunities, and enhances the overall living standards of the population. The escalating water demand since the early 2010s driven by economic growth and population increase, prompted the PPWSA to complete the second Master Plan 2005-2020. This comprehensive plan involved doubling the water production capacity between 2012 and 2017.

With the successful implementation of the Bakheng water supply project’s Phase 1 and 2, the third master plan (2016-2030) will be fulfilled, reaching a production capacity of 1 million m3/day to ensure universal access, especially for those residing in peri-urban areas and underserved communities.

The Bakheng Water Production Facilities Phase 1, which commenced construction on May 5, 2020, stands as the largest project in Cambodia's history of clean water infrastructure development.

The water pressure in the Takhmau area has been really good since the new treatment station came on line . The water reaches the fourth floor every night without having to use the pump to fill up the header tank, however the water contains more [ alu sulphate ? ] sediment that it previously had.
