Going after the gangs

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Going after the gangs

Post by phuketrichard »

better put that Haley away and wear long sleeve shirts
The Royal Thai Police (RTP) will now look into five major biker gangs based in the country after arresting the leader and some members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club in Pattaya on July 21.

The arrest of gang leader, an Austrian national "Mr Thomas", follows an incident in which a gang member, Olaf Thorsten Brinkmann, was involved in the murder of Hans Peter Walter Mack, 62, a German property broker in Pattaya in June.

"Five major gangs are on our radar," he said, adding they are the Outlaws Motorcycle Club or Outlaws MC, Hells Angels Motorcycle Club or Hells Angels, the Bandidos Motorcycle Club, which is also known as the Bandido Nation, the Mongols Motorcycle Club or the Mongol Brotherhood, and the Vagos Motorcycle Club, which is also known as the Green Nation.

The Outlaws also have their networks in Phuket and Koh Samui in Surat Thani, he said, adding the other gangs live in other parts of the country, mainly tourist destinations.

The gang members tend to ride big bikes like Harley-Davidson motorcycles, have tattoos and are involved in narcotics distribution and other criminal activities including assault, extortion, theft, loan-sharking, fraud, money laundering, attempted murder or murder.
and they might fuck things up for long term stayers>
"For example, requirements for obtaining a retirement visa are easy, he said, adding the law requires any foreigner aged at least 50 years old to have at least 800,000 baht in their bank account or an income certificate with a monthly salary not less than 65,000 baht. That requirement is too low and does not help screen quality applicants."

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

He can get rid of a few foreign bikers, but as he will fail to get rid of corrupt police officers as per usual, nothing much will change.

Let's also not forget that this is the same clown who, back in the day when he was immigration chief, claimed that he got rid of "all overstayers". They're still arresting overstayers who had arrived before he did that, surprise surprise. He's as useless as they come, just a lot more ambitious than most.

The retirement visa requirements have been "too low" for many years. It's a shame that they haven't been increased gradually - once they'll finally get around to doing that, it will be a major shock.

What I've never understood is why they don't check criminal records of ALL first-time longterm extension applicants. Surely many foreigners who engage in criminal activity in Thailand already had criminal records back home. That would be one change they could make immediately. They don't even have to change any law, because Thai immigration law already deems foreigners with a criminal record inadmissible, it just isn't being checked in most cases.
