UK to start roadside drug-testing for Xmas
More fun at Xmas
Not sure how they will prosecute for prescription drugs - is the doctor responsible if he doesn't tell you not to drive ? People react to drugs in different ways - how to know if you are over the limit (and what limit is that ?) until they "drugalyse" you ? How to know if last night's sleeping pill is still in your bloodstream when you drive the next day ?A new roadside test could be used by police as part of a Christmas and New Year crackdown on drug driving, a home officer minister has indicated.
Policing minister Mike Penning said motorists pulled over will not know whether they will be breathalysed, “drugalysed” or both.
The new drug-testing kits approved by the Home Office will analyse samples of saliva instantly to detect for both illegal narcotics and legal highs.
The Sunday Telegraph said police will also use the kits to catch drivers who have taken prescription medicines, including strong painkillers, sleeping pills and drugs to treat anxiety, that can impair their ability to concentrate on the road.
Penning said the “drugalyser” kits were approved by officials last week for use in prosecuting motorists who drive while impaired by a range of illegal and prescription drugs.

They should perform roadside colo-rectal exams while they're at it. "Got the whole arm up there, copper?"

That probably covers most drivers. Between that, and bus lane cameras, bus gates, traffic light cams, average speed cams , traffic calming which causes jams, and police stops, driving is a chore now.

Yeah, don't see how this can work. How can you be over the legal limit when (as far as I know?) there are no legal limits on prescription drugs ?UKJ wrote:The Sunday Telegraph said police will also use the kits to catch drivers who have taken prescription medicines, including strong painkillers, sleeping pills and drugs to treat anxiety, that can impair their ability to concentrate on the road

Or is driving with any kind of medication against the law ?
That'll sure cut down the traffic jams. (Not to mention increasing unemployment for those who drive to work.)

As far as I remember this wasn’t a success. Even police back here in USA also did same thing but it caused congestion and jams. My cousin works with a Los Angeles DUI lawyer and told me there was more criticism than any accolades for LAPD with this drive.
